No. 20 Georgetown Scores Late Goal to Hand Women’s Soccer First Loss
8/24/2023 6:54:00 PM | Women's Soccer
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Brianne Riley broke a scoreless deadlock on a goal-mouth scramble with just over four minutes to play, sending 20th-ranked Georgetown to a 1-0 win over visiting Bucknell on Thursday afternoon at Shaw Field. The Bison (2-1) suffered their first loss of the season, while the Hoyas improved to 2-0-1.
Georgetown, winners of six of the last seven Big East titles and an NCAA participant in each of the last 12 seasons, controlled possession throughout and logged all 21 shots attempted in the game. Bucknell's veteran defense held firm, however, as only six of the Hoyas' 21 shots were on target. Eight of their attempts were blocked on the way in, goalkeeper Jenna Hall made four saves, and Meghan White acrobatically cleared another ball off the line with about 10 minutes to play.
Bucknell played No. 17 West Virginia to a scoreless draw last season for its first-ever point against a ranked opponent, and the Bison were less than five minutes away from repeating the feat when Georgetown cashed in on a corner kick. In heavy traffic inside the 6-yard box, Riley got just enough of her body on the ball to trundle it across the line as six players and the ball ended up in the back of the net.
Bucknell's challenging week continues on Sunday with a trip to No. 21 Pittsburgh. The 1 p.m. start can be seen on ACC Network Extra.
