ANN ARBOR, Mich.- The Bucknell Bison women's water polo team dropped a narrow 10-9 game to Saint Francis University on Saturday. The Bison fell to 5-15 overall and 0-3 in the CWPA competition.
The entire game was a tight contest. Both teams went 1-1 in penalty shots opportunities. Bucknell struck first on a Boati Motau goal and then added to the lead thanks to an Isabelle Monaghan conversion. Saint Francis tallied once, and then Gwen Kallmeyer found the back of the net for a 3-1 Bucknell lead.
SFU tied it up early in the second quarter. After the quick scores, the rest of the period became a defensive struggle as neither team could penetrate the goal. The halftime score was knotted at 3-3.
Bucknell came out firing in the third quarter thanks to Kallmeyer and Motau teaming up to score one goal each SFU scored, but Monaghan answered the call. The Red Flash found the back of the net to make it 6-5 Bison entering the final stanza.
Saint Francis dominated most of the fourth quarter by scoring three straight games to take an 8-6 advantage. Bella Schraa countered with a tally at the 1:04 minute, but as the seconds ticked down, the Bison seemed out of luck until Isabelle Monaghan pounded home a goal with one second left.
The Bison battled hard in the two overtime periods, but the Red Flash notched two goals. Bucknell tried to rally, but the Orange & Blue could only score one goal and fell 10-9 to the fellow Pennsylvania school.
