LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. – Freshman Paige Richter's clutch birdie on the 18th hole moved the Bucknell women's golf team from a tie for third place into solo second, as the SMSU Spring Challenge wrapped up on Tuesday evening at the Wigwam Resort's Blue Course. Richter's birdie at the last also gave her a career-best, even-par 72 – the best in the field by two strokes – and moved her up to a personal-best third-place finish on the individual leaderboard.
Bucknell posted a 314 team total on Tuesday, eight better than its first-round score. Lehigh won the tournament with a 614 composite, followed by Bucknell at 636. The Bison nosed out Metropolitan State-Denver and Colorado-Colorado Springs, who both finished at 637.
Playing in the final threesome of the day, Richter reached the par-5 18th hole in two and lagged her 20-foot eagle putt to tap-in range to slide the Bison into second place. She wasn't the only Bucknell player to finish strong. Morgan Sohosky birdied the par-3 17th and finished with a par on the way to a 79, and Kelsey Yi made her third birdie of the day on No. 18 to finish with an 81. Kayla Yi was the team's fourth counter with an 82.
Richter bettered her previous career best by one shot. She posted a 1-over 73 in her very first collegiate round at the William & Mary Invitational in the fall. The 72 was three strokes shy of the Bucknell record, and it was the 16th round of even-par or better in team history.
Richter finished in sole possession of third place with a 36-hole total of 150 (78-72). Emily Shimkus of Colorado-Colorado Springs tallied a 147 (73-74) to win the tournament by one shot over Lehigh's Yuki Zhu (74-74).
Sohosky totaled 159 to finish T-10th and secure her first career top-10. Kelsey Yi placed 13th at 160.
Next up for the Bison is the Prospect Bay Intercollegiate in Grasonville, Md., on Apr. 1-2.
