PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Bucknell University women's water polo team dropped two matches to ranked opponents on Sunday afternoon, falling 21-7 to No. 17 Wagner and 18-11 to No. 22 Marist.
Bucknell now stands at 2-7 this season.
Game One: No. 17 Wagner 21, Bucknell 7
Wagner took its second matchup against the Bison on Sunday, outscoring the Bison 8-1 in the first half of play to cruise to its tenth win of the season.
The Seahawks scored the first eight goals of the game, keeping the Bison scoreless until the 2:15 mark of the second quarter when Gwen Kallmeyer found the back of the cage.
The Bison did manage to find six goals in the second half, including two more from Kallmeyer as she managed her first career hat trick in the defeat. However, Wagner kept its foot on the gas, scoring 13 goals in the second half to take the 21-7 victory, its third straight game posting 20 or more goals.
Boati Motau, Bella Schraa, and Bella Moynihan accounted for Bucknell's other goals in the defeat.
Game Two: No. 22 Marist 18, Bucknell 11
Bucknell managed to tie its season high in goals scored against the Red Foxes in its final game of the tournament, including a career-high five goals from first-year Schraa, but Marist eventually pulled away in the second half by using a 6-1 run to take an 18-11 win.
It was a back-and-forth affair in the first half, with the two teams combining for 14 goals through the first 16 minutes. The Red Foxes started the quicker of the two teams, racing out to a 5-1 lead. However, Bucknell managed to cut back into the lead over the final minutes of the half, including a goal with three seconds left by Isabelle Monaghan, to cut the lead to 8-6 as the Bison finished the final minutes of the half scoring five of the final eight goals.
Bucknell pulled within one to start the second half on a goal by Schraa just 13 seconds into half, but Marist would regain control of the contest by scoring six of the next seven goals to take a 14-8 lead with 6:21 left in the fourth quarter. The Bison would never get closer than five the rest of the way in the defeat.
Bucknell will make its debut at Kinney Natatorium next weekend for three games as a part of the Bucknell Invitational. The Bison will take on Michigan and Saint Francis (Pa.) in its first CWPA action on Saturday, before closing the Invite on Sunday with a non-conference matchup against Villanova at 10:30 a.m.
