Women's Basketball Defeats Army, 60-50
2/4/2023 3:05:00 PM | Women's Basketball
WEST POINT, N.Y.- The Bucknell Bison women's basketball team (9-13, 5-6 PL) overcame a sluggish third quarter to beat the Army Black Knights (8-13, 6-5 PL), 60-50. The Bison led at halftime, 31-23, fell behind by one point after the third quarter, and outscored Army by 11 in the final period to win by double-digits.Â
For the second straight game, Isabella King scored 19 points to tie her career-high in that category. The sophomore sharpshooter went 5-of-9 from the field and was clutch at the line.Â
Cecelia Collins made a triumphant return to the court by scoring 10 points in spurts of playing time. It was the first game action for the Scranton sophomore since the Boston U. game.Â
Bucknell used clutch free-throw shooting to defeat the Black Knights. Bucknell shot 23-of-28 from the charity stripe to Army's 6-of-10 shooting. Tai Johnson went a perfect 7-of-7, and Isabella King was 7-of-9 from the line to lead the Bison.
The Bison started the game with a 4-0 run courtesy of baskets by Emma Shaffer and Emma Theodorsson. Bucknell continued to control the quarter, with the crowning play coming off a King three-pointer for a 14-6 lead. Army counterattacked with a 5-0 run, and Collins answered with a bucket to seal the scoring at 16-11 for the quarter. Emma Shaffer collected nine rebounds in the period.
The second quarter witnessed the Bison continuing their advantage. Anytime, the Black Knights attempted to draw even; the Bison blunted the charge with timing baskets. Collins recorded four points in the quarter proving again what a welcome sight her return was for Bison fans. King missed her first-ever collegiate free throw attempt but nailed three other tries to provide force to the Bison offense. Caroline Dingler drained a basket with five seconds left to make the score, 31-23 at halftime.Â
Army changed the battle plan in the third quarter and switched the momentum of the game. Before that occurred, the Bison went up by 11 points. Then the Army run started. Bucknell did not cease to score, but Army kept slicing back. At the 4:04 mark, Army tied it up at 37-37. Then the Black Knights seized a four-point lead. But the Bison did not shrink in the face of adversity. Some fast-break magic by Collins and King resulted in a traditional three-point play and a 43-42 game entering the fourth period. More importantly, the Bison swiped the momentum.Â
Â
The fourth stanza proved to be eventful in the opening verses. Remi Sisselman drained two free throws to take the lead. Army tied it up for the final time. Tai Johnson converted two free throws, and King hit another three-pointer. That five-point swing proved decisive, as Army would never creep closer than three points. After Collins scored a bucket at the 4:12 mark, the Bison would not score another field goal for the rest of the game. It was not an issue since Bucknell made nine free throws to seal the game. Army had looks but could only score two more buckets. The Orange & Blue prevented any miracle comeback by hitting their free throws. King's final make ended the scoring at 60-50Â and gave Bucknell its third-straight win.Â
