HERSHEY, Pa. – Continued strong doubles play and two clutch wins from freshmen at the bottom of the singles lineup propelled the Bucknell men's tennis team to a narrow 4-3 win over Siena on Friday night at the Hershey Racquet Club. It was the fifth victory in a row for the Bison, who pushed their spring dual-match record to 5-4.
Freshmen Brendan McDonald and Oscar Bain Moreno de Vega were two-time winners for the Bison, who defeated Siena (4-4) by a 4-3 margin for the second straight season despite playing without No. 1 man Harrison Gold due to illness. The Saints were picked second in this year's MAAC preseason poll
Bain teamed with fellow rookie Amar Tahirovic for a 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles, and McDonald and Tim Zelikovsky won by the same score at No. 3 to give Bucknell the doubles point for the sixth match in a row. McDonald improved to 16-3 in doubles on the season.
Singles play took place on three courts, so the top three flights took the courts first. Nick Mueller put another point on the board for the Bison with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Tomas Del Olmo at No. 2, but Siena took the momentum back with three-set wins on courts 1 and 3. Dante Russo won a third-set super tiebreaker 13-11 over Tahirovic at No. 1 to knot the dual at 2-2.
In the second singles wave, Siena's Eddie Vo won at No. 4, but McDonald and Bain delivered the win for the Bison on courts 5 and 6. Bain defeated Max Acri 6-2, 6-2, and McDonald fell behind Matt Nardone 2-5 in the opening set before taking 11 straight games to win 7-5, 6-0.
Bucknell will be off on Saturday before heading to Olean, N.Y., to face St. Bonaventure on Sunday at 1 p.m.
