RICHMOND, Va. – Bucknell men's lacrosse was on the scoreboard first and sat tied with Richmond early in the second quarter, but the Spiders went on to win 18-5 over the Bison at Robins Stadium Saturday afternoon.
Richmond (1-1), the Atlantic 10's preseason favorite, scored seven unanswered over the final 13:38 of the second quarter to grow a sizable lead and outscored Bucknell (1-2) 9-3 in the second half. Richmond held an 18-6 advantage in faceoffs and saw 10 extra-man opportunities, compared to Bucknell's four.
Michael Meyer finished with two goals for the Bison, while Connor Davis, Tanner Germain and Richie Striano each finished with one apiece. Davis also added an assist to match Meyer's two points, and Cam Doolan handed out two helpers. Andrew Stanzel led the team with four ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Two Spiders, Derek Madonna and Luke Grayum, finished with four goals each, and Grayum added four assists.
Meyer opened the scoring three minutes into the game, but it would be Bucknell's only lead as Richmond tied things up two minutes later and jumped in front with a goal at the 3:01 mark in the opening frame. Meyer's second of the game evened the score at 2-2 just 12 seconds into the second quarter, but Bucknell was held off the board for the next 19:45 of game time.
Richmond built a 10-2 lead during the Bison scoring drought before Striano put an end to the run five minutes into the third quarter.
The Spiders also put together a 5-0 run that lasted most of the fourth quarter before Davis found the back of the cage just before the final whistle for his eighth goal of the season.
Richmond ended the game with a 41-32 lead in shots, while turnovers were even at 13 for both teams. Jaz Zanelli went all 60 minutes in goal, finishing with eight saves. Richmond's goalie, Zach Vigue, posted 10 saves.
