LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell University women's water polo team took a 10-9 victory over Villanova on Sunday morning behind a strong second half. Bucknell's Boati Motau capitalized on a penalty shot drawn by Bella Schraa with 34 seconds remaining to break a 9-9 tie and give Bucknell its first home victory of the season.
Motau tied her career high with five goals, with all of her goals coming in the second half.
Villanova started the brighter of the two teams, taking a 3-1 lead with 58 seconds to go in the first quarter. Bucknell's Schraa then found the back of the cage just 17 seconds later to cut the Bucknell deficit to one.
The goal from Schraa was the start of a 4-0 run for the Bison, with Isabelle Monaghan and Gwen Kallmeyer scoring during the run. Kallmeyer and Monaghan scored Bucknell's fourth and fifth goal after capitalizing on early long passes from goalkeeper Annika Lampen and senior Chloe Smith. Villanova scored one goal at the end of the half as Bucknell took a 5-4 lead at the break.
The two teams kept things close in the third, as Bucknell held a narrow 8-6 lead at the end of that period before the Wildcats tied the game twice in the fourth, the latest with 48 seconds left. That set up Bucknell's final possession, when Megan LaCroix dumped the ball into Schraa, who drew the ensuing exclusion that set up Motau's decisive penalty shot.
Motau scored five goals in back-to-back games after her five-goal outing against Saint Francis (Pa.) last night. Monaghan added another multi-goal game while Bella Moynihan, Kallmeyer, and Schraa added Bucknell's other tallies. Lampen made several key saves down the stretch in the victory.
Bucknell returns to action next weekend at the Curtis Robinette Memorial Tournament in Erie, Pa.
