EMMITSBURG, Md.- The Bucknell Bison women's basketball team (2-7) fought gamely but lost 55-46 to the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers (3-4) on Tuesday night. The host team outscored Bucknell 20-10 in the final quarter to win.
Bucknell led for the entire first half. It took until three minutes into the third quarter until the Mount achieved its first lead. From that moment, it became a tightly fought game until the final minutes when the Mountaineers pulled away.Â
Emma Theodorsson obtained the second double-double of her career, scoring 12 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Ashley Sofilkanich led the Bison, as has become her custom, with 15 points.Â
The Bison shot 17-of-44 (38.6%) from the field. Mount only shot 35.6% but had 59 attempts to overcome the percentage discrepancy.
Bucknell blitzed out to a 6-0 lead. Mount counterattacked and cut the deficit down to 8-7. Isabella King buried a three, and Theodorsson added a basket to increase the lead back to six points. Again, the Emmitsburg team refused to concede and pared the Bucknell advantage to 16-14 as the first-quarter siren blared.Â
Mount twice tied up the score at 16-16 and 18-18 in the second quarter, but Bucknell refused to allow the Mountaineers to take the lead. The forwards powered the Bison attack as Sofilkanich and Nicole Davis scored five points to grow a five-point lead (23-18). The lead remained at five points until Mount scored a late layup for a 25-22 halftime score.Â
The Mount pressed hard at the beginning of the third quarter, but the Bison answered each score with a basket. The Mount seized its first lead at 28-27, but the advantage was short-lived as Sofilkanich converted a driving layup. Mount retook the lead on two free throws, and Sofilkanich returned the favor. The Mountaineers then buried a three-pointer and layup for a 35-31 lead. King answered with a three-pointer at the 3:30 mark. The two teams went cold until Theodorsson drained a floating jump shot with 17 seconds left. Bucknell held a slim 36-35 margin entering the fourth quarter.Â
The dice were quickly cast in the fourth period. Mount used a decisive 5-0 stretch to obtain a lead they would not surrender. A broken possession led to a three-pointer, and the next Bucknell possession resulted in a steal and a Mount layup. Bucknell called timeout, but the Mount was up 40-36. The Orange & Blue crept within two points on two Sofilkanich free throws. Mount answered the challenge with an 8-0 run to achieve a 48-39 lead with 2:23 remaining. Bucknell used a quick 5-0 run to heighten the drama. Caroline Dingler broke ankles on the possession, and the ball found itself to Theodorsson, who buried the three-pointer to unlock the double-double. Dingler then scored a bucket to make the score 48-44 Mount.Â
However, with 57 seconds remaining, Mount hit a dagger three-pointer for the seven-point lead. Theodorsson answered with a quick basket. The Mount sealed the win with four free throws as the Bison could not make more shots. The Mountaineers dribbled out the clock and collected the 55-46 victory.Â
