CLARION, Pa. – The Bucknell wrestling team placed four on the podium at the 2023 Clarion Open on Sunday, headlined by a first-place finish for freshman Noah Mulvaney (165). Cade Wirnsberger (3rd, 157), Dorian Crosby (3rd, 285) and Dylan Chappell (4th, 149) were Bucknell's other placewinners.
Mulvaney, a native of Hartford, Wis. who joined the Bison this season after an outstanding career at Arrowhead High School, went 6-0 at the Clarion Open with four victories coming by decision, one by major decision and one by technical fall over Michigan State's Konner Roche. Mulvaney defeated the No. 1, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 seeds en route to the 165-pound title.
In the semifinal round, Mulvaney defeated 2022 EIWA runner-up Josh Ogunsanya by a 6-4 decision. Ogunsanya entered the current season ranked No. 15 in the nation by Intermat. Mulvaney went on to defeat Isaac Wilcox of Ohio State with an 8-3 decision in the finals.
Fellow freshman Cade Wirnsberger also took down a nationally-ranked opponent in the 157-pound bracket, defeating No. 30 Jared Keslar of Pitt 6-4 in sudden victory in the third-place bout. It was Wirnsberger's second overtime win of the day, and he also topped Columbia's Andrew Garr by a 4-1 decision in the round of 32.
Crosby, who checked in at No. 24 in the Intermat preseason rankings, went 3-1 on the day and suffered his only loss to Clarion's fifth-seeded John Meyers by a narrow 4-3 decision in the semifinals. He posted two technical falls and a major decision, including a 15-0 tech fall in the third-place bout over Columbia's Vincent Mueller.
Chappell won his first three bouts of the day, including a 16-3 major decision over Michigan State's Clayton Jones, before losing in the semifinals and the third-place bout to take fourth. Chappell's other wins included a 4-1 decision over Pitt's Kelin Laffey and a 6-0 shutout over Reese Stephen.
Also notable was a 4-2 record for freshman Myles Takats (174), who won three straight in the consolation bracket after falling in the round of 16 to the No. 2 seed. Takats registered a 7-1 decision over eighth-seeded Emille Shannon of Michigan State.
Freshman Aiden Davis (149) also posted multiple wins to start the tournament, including a pin over Columbia's Karl Monaco and a tech fall over Gardner-Webb's Daniel Tierney.
Bucknell travels to Stillwater, Okla. on Friday, Nov. 10 to open its dual schedule against Oklahoma State.
