OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Bucknell wrestling team took fourth place out of 14 teams with 112.5 points at the 2023 Navy Classic on Saturday, as eight Bison finished as placewinners. The group was highlighted by 133-pound Champion Kurt Phipps, who went 4-0 on the day and defeated 31st-ranked Jacob Van Dee from Nebraska in the finals. The Bison made a big leap from 2022 when they finished eighth out of 12 teams.
Dylan Chappell was the second-highest placewinner for Bucknell after reaching the 149-pound finals and taking second place with a 4-1 record. Chappell's loss came against No. 1 ranked Ridge Lovett of Nebraska. Dorian Crosby (285) and Cade Wirnsberger both placed third, Nick Delp (157) and Noah Mulvaney (165) placed fourth, and Myles Takats (174) and Mikey Bartush (184) both placed sixth.
Phipps posted a tech fall and a major decision over his first two bouts before facing back-to-back Nebraska wrestlers. A second-period reversal gave him the lead over Kyle Buwick and led to a win in the semis. In the finals, Phipps used a third-period reversal to take a 2-1 lead and secured the riding time point to defeat his first nationally-ranked opponent of the season.
Chappell also had a thrilling run to the finals, battling in two narrow bouts in the second half of the day after a pin and a major decision in his first two. Chappell used a third-period takedown to overcome an early deficit and defeat Navy's Nick Vafiadis 4-1 in the quarterfinals. He then scored an overtime takedown against Princeton's Elija River to win 8-5 and advance to the championship bout. In the finals, Chappell ran into the top-ranked 149-pounder in the nation, Lovett, and was pinned to bring his day to an end with a runner-up spot.
In the 157 bracket, both Wirnsberger and Delp reached the semifinals with early wins. Delp posted back-to-back pins in the round of 16 and the quarterfinals. Both Bison suffered losses in the semis, with Wirnsberger's coming against No. 3 Peyton Robb of Nebraska. Delp and Wirnsberger squared off in the third-place bout, and it was the rookie that came out on top. Wirnsberger grabbed an early 3-0 lead with a first-period takedown, and Delp battled back with a pair of escapes later on. Wirnsberger, however, secured the riding time point and held on for 4-2 decision.
Mulvaney cruised to his appearance in the semis, posting a pin in the round of 32 and a big 26-11 tech fall in the round of 16. He knocked off Nebraska's Clayton Wilson 5-4 in the quarterfinals, but he was stopped by No. 25 Giano Petrucelli of Air Force in the semifinals. Mulvaney then fell to his second ranked opponent, No. 27 Garrett Thompson from Ohio, in the third-place bout.
At 184, Mikey Bartush battled his way back through the consolation bracket after a loss in the round of 16. The sophomore rattled off three straight wins, including one major decision, to reach the fifth-place bout. Going up against Navy's Zyan Hall, Bartush trailed 18-9 heading into the third period. He made a valiant effort at a comeback, registering an escape, a takedown and a late four-point nearfall, but it was too little too late as Hall prevailed 22-20 in the high-scoring affair.
Crosby, Bucknell's final placewinner, posted wins over opponents from Nebraska and Princeton in his first two bouts before suffering a 4-1 defeat to Navy's No. 10 Grady Griess in the semifinals. He found retribution against the Midshipmen in the third-place bout, pinning Jamier Ferere to earn third place.
Nebraska won the Navy Classic with 212 points, followed by second-place Navy with 137. Coming in just ahead of the Bison was Princeton with 134.5 points.
The Bison are off the next two weeks before returning to action against Wisconsin on the road on Sunday, Dec. 3.
