
Bucknell Men's Water Polo Advances to MAWPC Semifinals with 17-7 Win over Mount St. Mary's

LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The Bucknell men's water polo team had nine different goal scorers as the Bison defeated Mount St. Mary's 17-7 on Friday in their Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference Tournament opening game at Kinney Natatorium. The Bison advance to the semifinals, where they will take on Navy on Saturday in the third game of the day at 4 p.m.
Bucknell wasted no time in the match-up against Mount St. Mary's, securing a 10-3 run in the first half.
Starting the first period strong with back-to-back goals, fifth-year attacker Andu Vlasceanu scored his first of six goals on the night with an assist from sophomore attacker Aleksa Stefanovic, and sophomore center defender Jack Murad found the back of the net for the Bison. Bucknell's defense held Mount St. Mary's to just one goal in the first period on the way to an early 4-1 lead.
Stefanovic kicked off the second period, winning the swim-off and earning the Bison offensive possession. Less than 30 seconds later, Vlascenu scored his second goal of the game, shortly followed by Stefanovic extending Bucknell's scoring gap to 6-1.
Freshman Aaron Tarr secured the Mountaineers' fourth goal at the start of the second half. Freshman attacker Sean Michael Tunnicliff answered back for the Bison shortly after receiving a pass from junior center defender Hasan Mogultay to sink the ball into the far corner of the net. Mount St. Mary's only recorded one more goal that period. The Bison finished up with two more goals, coming from Vlasceanu and senior attacker Walker Butler.
Bucknell scored its first goal of the final period with 7:22 on the clock when junior attacker Jack Bruce found freshman center defender Gregory Alexander Nordheim across the pool to rip a shot on the net and score his first of two goals on the night. Sophomore attacker Ian Shultz received a pass from senior center defender Liam Stott to score.
The goal leaders were Vlasceanu with his six goals, followed by Nordheim, junior attacker Shay Gillearn, Stefanovic, and Tunnicliff all with two goals.
