
Volleyball Drops PL Quarterfinals Match to Navy

LEWISBURG, Pa.- Despite a raucous Davis Gym crowd, the No. 4 seed Bucknell Bison volleyball team (15-11) fell in three sets (23-25, 19-25, 23-25) to the No. 5 seed Navy Midshipmen in Tuesday's Patriot League Quarterfinals match. The Bison generated points and momentum but could not sustain the advantage. Tijana Kostic led the Orange & Blue attack with 14 kills. Senior Catherine Jamison playing in her final Bucknell game had 12 kills. Cameron Lloyd collected 14 digs. The home game was Bucknell's first home PL Tournament match since 2000.Â

The first set was one for the mythical ages as it featured 19 ties and 11 lead changes. Navy blitzed out to a 4-2 lead but the Bison rallied back to take a 6-4 advantage. The two squads continuously battled back-and-forth as each team would seize the lead but could not build any advantage larger than two points. Bucknell sneaked ahead 22-21 on two kills from Patriot League Rookie of the Year Sidney Shaffer and Cameron Lloyd. The decisive moment of the set came when Navy regained the initiative on a 3-0 run. Bucknell scored once but Navy won the next point to win the set, 25-23.Â
Bucknell scored the first point in the second set, however, Navy controlled the early portion extending to a 11-8 lead. The Bison rallied to tie the contest at 11-11 powered by a Jamison kill and two service aces by the PL Libero of the Year Jordan Hardy. The Midshipmen sailed away using a 5-1 boost to create separation. Bucknell fought back to within 19-17. Navy prevented any heroics by using a 6-2 stretch to win the set.Â
The Bison went down swinging in the final set. Navy inched its way to a 10-7 lead. With the score at 12-10 Navy, the Bison launched a 10-3 run to swipe the advantage. Kostic supplied four kills during the stretch. Euphoria reigned in Davis Gym as it appeared the game would be extended. However, the Annapolis squadron ruined the celebration with a 7-2 run to tie the game. Jamison blunted their momentum with a kill to retake the lead. Navy would not be denied its prize as the Midshipmen ran off three straight kills to take the set, the match, and advance to play Colgate in the next round.Â

Jordan Hardy passed Susie Teitsworth's 1995 season of 528 for third-most digs in Bucknell single-season history. The junior libero gathered 11 digs to finish 2023 with 537. Hardy already owns second place in the Bucknell annals with 591 in 2022. She is 78 digs away from passing Brandi Trapasso for more career digs in Bucknell history.Â
