LEWISBURG, Pa. – Freshman Alex Creamean fired a 1-under-par 69, his third red number of the fall season, and the Bucknell men's golf team is in third place in a 19-team field after posting a 287 team tally on day one of the Bucknell Invitational.
Colgate and Long Island share the 18-hole lead after compiling 2-over 282s on Sunday. Bucknell sits five shots back, and Villanova (290) and Youngstown State (292) round out the top five.
Creamean is in fourth place on the individual leaderboard after making five birdies in his first career home tournament round. He birdied three of the final five holes to shoot an even-par 36 on the front nine, and then he played his final six holes in 2-under, thanks to birdies at 15 and 17, to finish with his second straight 69. Creamean also shot 69 in the final round of the Macdonald Cup two weeks ago.
Bucknell's other three counting scores all came from sophomores. Andres Barraza bookended his round of 71 with birdies at 1 and 18. James Robbins overcame a tough start by going birdie-eagle on holes 8 and 9, and he added two more birdies at 15 and 16 on the way to a 72. James Key followed with a 75, and the Bison discarded a 77 from freshman Hayden Quinn.
Three Bison played as individuals. Lyman Brackett posted a 77, Michael Rudnick shot 78, and Jack Maddaloni carded an 80.
The round of the day in the 108-player field was a 4-under 66 from LIU's Lewis Wright. Wright made seven birdies, including three in a row on the back nine to get to 5-under on the day.
Towson's Arihau Fanna (-3), Saint Joseph's Christian Matt (-2), and Creamean are the only other players in the field in red numbers. Five others are at even par.
The 54-hole tournament continues on Monday with tee times beginning at 9 a.m.
