SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. – Freshman Alex Creamean fired a 4-under 31 on the opening nine on the way to a 2-under 70 to lead the Bucknell men's golf team on day one of the Veterans Intercollegiate at Sebonack Golf Club on Monday. Andres Barraza followed with a 72, and the Bison are in sixth place in a 12-team field after posting a 297 team score.
Creamean was coming off back-to-back third-place finishes in his two previous tournaments, and he has now broken par in four of his last five rounds. He began this event with back-to-back birdies on the first two holes and added two more on 5 and 9 to make the turn at 4-under. He dropped back to -1 with three bogeys on the back nine but finished with a birdie at the par-5 18th to post a 70.
Creamean is tied for fourth in a 60-player field at 2-under, three shots off the lead. Bryant's Dylan Gallagher carded the low round of the day with a 5-under 67. LIU's Lewis Wright is in second after posting a 68, followed by Holy Cross' Nolan Schuermann with a 69 and then five players with 70s.
Barraza is tied for 14th with his 72, which consisted of four birdies, four bogeys, and 10 pars. James Key finished with a birdie at 18 to shoot 75, and Bucknell's fourth counting score was an 80 from James Robbins. Lyman Brackett shot 82.
LIU compiled a 5-under 283 team score and has a six-shot lead over Iona. Bryant (293), Siena (294), and Fairfield (296) round out the top five.
Bucknell is first among the four Patriot League teams in the field. Holy Cross sits in seventh place with 301, Navy is eighth with 302, and Army is 11th with 310.
Bucknell head coach Mike Binney, a 20-year veteran of the United States Marine Corps, is hosting this two-day, 36-hole event. A team from the Veteran Golfers Association is also in the field, and they were led by a 78 from Chris Gatcomb in the opening round.
