SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. – Alex Creamean fired his second straight 2-under-par 70 on the way to becoming the first Bucknell freshman ever to win a tournament title, and the Bison moved up to fourth place as a team as the 2023 Veterans Intercollegiate wrapped up on Tuesday at Sebonack Golf Club.
Creamean began the day in a tie for fourth place, but he stormed to the top of the leaderboard after posting the only under-par round in the 60-player field. He had just one blemish on his card all day, a double-bogey at the par-3 12th hole. Other than that, he made four birdies and 13 pars on the way to a 4-under 140 for the week.
The Winnetka, Ill., native has now broken par in five of his last six rounds, lowering his season scoring average to 72.076. That is just a fraction of a stroke behind Chris Tanabe (72.066 in 2019) and Blake Wisdom (72.071) for the team record for low average in a fall season. Creamean's mark is the best-ever for a freshman in his first semester of competition.
Creamean won the Veterans Intercollegiate by three shots over Fairfield's Colin Summers and the LIU tandem of Lewis Wright and Marcelo Mexsen. Wright claimed the runner-up trophy based on lower first-round score.
It was Bucknell's 38th individual tournament title and the first since Jackson Bussell won the Howard Bison Invitational in October 2021.
Bucknell also counted 77s from Andres Barraza and James Robbins and an 82 from James Key. Barraza, who shot 72 on Monday, joined Creamean in the top-10 with a T-9th finish. The 306 team score was good enough to move the Bison up two spots to a fourth-place finish, one stroke ahead of Siena.
LIU backed up its first-round, 5-under 283 with a 299 in round two, and the Dolphins finished off a 17-shot win over second-place Iona. Fairfield finished in third place. Patriot League rivals Holy Cross (7th), Navy (8th), and Army (10th) landed farther down the leaderboard.
Bucknell's fall season is now complete. The Bison will resume play on Feb. 11-13 at the Palmas del Mar Collegiate, hosted by UNC Greensboro in Humacao, Puerto Rico.
