About the Bison
- Bucknell wraps up its 2023 fall season by hosting the Veterans Intercollegiate at Sebonack GC on Long Island this week.
- Bucknell head coach Mike Binney is a 20-year veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, where he served as an attack helicopter pilot and a recipient of the Bronze Star Medal, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, and the Joint Service Commendation Medal. Coach Binney still advocates for the U.S. military service men and women in his second career as a golf coach, and in recent years he has begun hosting a tournament that also includes a team from the Veteran Golfers Association. This year's 12-team field also includes Army and Navy, in addition to the VGA team comprised of military veterans.Â
- Bucknell has appeared in four tournaments already this fall, most recently finishing in third place out of 19 teams at its own annual invitational on Oct. 8-10. The Bison have also placed fourth at events hosted by Colgate and Cornell, and seventh at Yale's Macdonald Cup.
- The Bison have a 290.6 team average in 11 rounds this fall, with a low of 281 in their most recent round at the Bucknell Golf Club. In relation to par, the team's 1-under 287 in round two at Colgate on Sept. 2.
- Freshman Alex Creamean is coming off back-to-back T-3rd finishes at Yale and Bucknell, and three of his last four rounds have been under par. Creamean shot 69-73-67 at the Bucknell Invitational, lowering his season average to a team-best 72.5.
- All eight Bison have scoring averages of 75.7 or better, and seven are sub-75. Sophomore James Robbins (73.3), sophomore Andres Barraza (74.3), freshman Hayden Quinn (74.4), and sophomore James Key (74.6) are next in line behind Creamean on a young squad.
- Creamean, Barraza, Robbins, Key, and sophomore Lyman Brackett (74.7) will be in the lineup this week at Sebonack. Â Â
- Coach Mike Binney has invited the VGA to his home tournament at Bucknell in recent years, and he first developed the concept of the Veterans Intercollegiate tournament at an away golf course in 2021-22. In February of that year, the Bison hosted an event at Orange County National GC in Winter Garden, Fla.
- The Bison finished in second place among eight teams in that event, posting rounds of 292-294-297. Siena ran away with the team title with a 7-under 857 total. South Florida entered four individuals in the field, and they finished 1-2-3-4, led by Chase Gullikson with an 11-under 205. Blake Wisdom was the low Bison at even-par 216.
