LEWISBURG, Pa.- After a 2-0 weekend against Army and Colgate, the Bucknell Bison volleyball team swept the Patriot League weekly awards. Catherine Jamison won Player of the Week, and Sidney Shaffer received Rookie of the Week. The Bison defeated league-leading Colgate on Friday night in an epic five-set match. Bucknell trailed two sets to one before rallying to break Colgate's 33-home court winning streak. Against Army on Saturday, Bucknell, after a lengthy review overturned Army's winning point, won the first set 38-36. The Bison went on to take the match three sets to one.Â
"Sid and Cat both had great weekends," said head coach Tyler Hagstrom. "They consistently played at a high level and provided us with plenty of offensive firepower."
Catherine Jamison collected the kills over the weekend in her home state. The New Yorker tallied 18 kills in each contest to lead the Bison with 36 on the weekend. Jamison continues her impressive senior campaign, ranking fourth in kills (238) and seventh in kills per set (3.09) in the Patriot League. She ranks fourth in points (261.5) and seventh in points per set (3.40) in the circuit. Jamison's laurel made her the first Bucknell player to win the Player of the Week Award since Bridgette Holland on Nov. 12, 2018.Â
Shaffer has been one of the shiniest stars in the Bucknell rookie class constellation. The California freshman was scorching hot on the opposition, gathering 26 kills over the weekend, including a season-high 17 against Colgate. As an all-around player, she added nine digs, 11 blocks, and 35 points. Shaffer has been one of the most efficient attackers in the Patriot League, ranking sixth (.282) in hitting percentage. She has also become a steady bulwark against the opposition's projectiles, placing third (1.15) in blocks per set and fifth (77) overall in blocks. It is Shaffer's second Rookie of the Week award. She previously won it on Sept. 26. Shaffer joins teammates Bri Frazilus and Tijana Kostic as multiple-time Rookie of the Week winners. The 2023 squad boasts five all-time Rookie of the Week recipients: Valentina Feigl, Frazilus, Jordan Hardy, Kostic, and Shaffer.Â
The two awards mark the first time the Bison swept the Patriot League weekly awards since Shannon Walker won Offensive Player of the Week and Brandi Trapasso notched Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 30, 2000. The League switched to the current format of Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week in 2001.Â
Jamison, Shaffer, and the Bison return to Davis Gym with two key home games against Loyola (Oct. 27) at 7 p.m. and Navy (Oct. 28) at 4 p.m.
