Volleyball Wins 3-1 Battle at Army; Finishes 2-0 on the Weekend
10/21/2023 7:30:00 PM | Volleyball
WEST POINT, N.Y.- The Bucknell Bison volleyball team (11-9, 7-4 PL) completed a 2-0 weekend against the #1 and #2 teams in the Patriot League with a 3-1 (38-36, 27-29, 26-24, 25-23) win over the Army Black Knights (11-9, 8-3 PL). Bucknell used the momentum gained from a lengthy 38-36 first set to overcome the stout military academy squad at its home arena. It was Bucknell's first win against Army since 2015 and the first victory at West Point since 2003.Â
Catherine Jamison totaled 18 kills to lead the Bison attack, and Jordan Hardy recorded 34 digs. Caleigh O'Connell tallied 39 assists. Libby Nieporte played excellent defense, collecting 27 digs. Bri Frazilus, Cameron Lloyd, Sidney Shaffer, and Riley Tucker all notched nine kills.Â
"The team fought hard again tonight," said head coach Tyler Hagstrom. "Each set went the distance, and I am proud of the pose we showed to finish."
Recap
The first set was one for the history books as it lasted nearly an hour and witnessed 74 total points. The length set the tone for the lengthy match. The Bison's ability to pull it out set up the Orange & Blue's eventual triumph. Army battled back from a deficit in set two to win the extended set 29-27. Bucknell remained undaunted and won the next stanza, 26-24. The fourth and final set followed the same script of close play. The Bison grabbed the lead and watched an Army attack fly out of bounds to win 25-23 and take the game.Â
The Bucknell win avenged the earlier 3-0 loss to the Black Knights in Davis Gym. The Bison are now in third place after taking down Colgate and Army on the weekend. It is the second 2-0 road weekend for the Bison in 2023 after going 18 years without such a feat.Â
Fittingly, the first set was a series of back-and-forth runs. Army inched ahead 11-8 before Bucknell used a 6-0 run to grab the advantage. The Black Knights counterattacked for a 20-16 lead. The teams traded points evenly until it was 24-20 Army. The West Point squadron seemed ready to take the opening set, but the Bison had other plans, using a 4-0 run. The Black Knights had the set point eight times different times, but the Bison refused to allow the fatal blow. Army appeared to win at one duration but a long review overturned the result, giving Bucknell new life. Assistant coach Jeremy Young noticed that Army served out of order and after a lengthy discussion, the point was negated. With Army up 36-35, Bucknell used a 3-0 run powered by an Army attack error, a Sidney Shaffer kill, and the winning kill by Nieporte to take the set.Â
Â
The second set continued the tightly fought contest as both teams battled to an 8-8 tie. The Bison raced ahead to an 18-14 lead. Army fought back to draw even at 21-21. The squads alternated points until the score was 27-27. Army tallied twice to take the set and even the game at 1-1.Â
Angered by the result, the Bison stormed out to an 8-2 lead in the third set. Army, refusing to yield, battled back and tied it up 11-11. Bucknell temporarily regained the lead, but Army stole it back. The Black Knights had a 19-17 advantage until the Bison tied it up at 20-20. Once again, the teams traded points. With the tally at 24-24, the stage was set for the pivotal play of the game. An Army attack error gave Bucknell the set point. Sidney Shaffer didn't waste the opportunity to pound home a kill to win the set.Â
Army controlled 70% of the final set but could not close the door on the comeback-driven Bison. Army erased Bucknell's 4-1 advantage and stretched ahead 14-11. The Black Knights galloped to 19-15 and seemed likely to extend the match to five sets. Bucknell stormed back to tie it at 21-21. Army took its final lead at 23-22. Bucknell ended the set and match with a 3-0 run. A final Army attack error sails far over the Bison heads to give Bucknell the historic win.Â
