LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell men's swimming and diving team collected both Patriot League weekly awards following its successful opening weekend of competition. John Gehrig was named the Patriot League Male Swimmer of the Week, and Jackson Vinarub was named the Patriot League Male Diver of the Week.
Gehrig, who received Swimmer of the Week recognition for the second time in his career, won five individual events and was a member of two winning relays during Bucknell's 2-0 weekend against Patriot League opponents. In Saturday's meet at Holy Cross, Gehrig won the 100 backstroke with a 53.15 and the 200 breaststroke with a 2:07.75. He also swam the fourth leg of the winning 200 medley relay team (1:34.87) and the first leg of the winning 200 freestyle relay team (1:26.56).
On Saturday, Gehrig posted wins in the 100 butterfly (49.74), the 200 butterfly (1:51.22) and the 200 IM (1:53.81). The senior two-time All-Patriot League honoree has now won 29 individual events in his career. He ended the weekend by swimming the fourth leg of the runner-up 200 medley relay team (1:33.27).
Vinarub posted three wins on the boards over the weekend and finished in second once. The sophomore's score of 289.65 in the 1-meter dive at Boston won the event and ranks third in school history. It was Bucknell's best score in the event since David Magaro's 295.65 in 2010. Vinarub finished second in the 1-meter at Holy Cross with a 257.03.
Vinarub took first on the 3-meter boards both days, scoring a 272.55 at Holy Cross and a 262.2 at Boston U. It's Vinarub's first time earning Patriot League Diver of the Week recognition. Gehrig's and Vinarub's efforts helped the Bison defeat Holy Cross 186-112 and Boston U. 173.5-125.5.
The Bison are back in action on Saturday, Oct. 21 when they host the Fall Invite at Kinney Natatorium.
