LEWISBURG, Pa. – Freshman Alex Creamean fired a 3-under-par 67 on the way to his second third-place finish in as many tournaments, and sophomore James Key followed with a 69 to help the Bucknell men's golf team hold on to its third-place standing as the Bucknell Invitational wrapped up on Tuesday.
The Bison improved their team score each day, from 287 to 285 to Tuesday's 1-over 281. Their 853 total put them solidly in third place, behind only Colgate (839) and Long Island (844) in a field of 19 teams. Bucknell finished five shots clear of fourth-place Mount St. Mary's, whose final-round 5-under 275 was the best of the day.
The 853 composite was also the third-best 54-hole total in team history. The Bison shot 845 on their home course at the 2017 Patriot League Championship and 850 at the 2021 Bucknell Invitational.
In addition to the two scores in the 60s from Creamean and Key, Bucknell also counted a 72 from sophomore Andres Barraza and a 73 from freshman Hayden Quinn. James Robbins' 74 was not needed.
Creamean continued to impress early in his career. He was coming off a T-3rd finish at the Macdonald Cup at Yale two weeks earlier, and he placed T-3rd once again in a field of 108 players after posting rounds of 69-73-67. He tallied six birdies in the final round and 12 for the tournament, and he was one of four players to finish in red numbers.
Lewis Wright of LIU shot 66-70-67 to post a wire-to-wire victory with a 7-under total of 203. Colgate's Kevin Hollomon finished at 4-under, and then Creamean and Devin Smith of Mount St. Mary's tied for third at 1-under. Josh Nagy of Robert Morris, the defending champion, finished alone in fifth at even-par 210.
Key began the tournament with rounds of 75 and 81, but he bounced back nicely with a career-best 69 in round three. He made five birdies on the day and was 3-under through 13 holes. Creamean and Key both had looks at the school record of 65 but made late bogeys coming in.
Barraza recorded a top-20 finish, placing T-12th with rounds of 71-70-72 for a 3-over total of 213.
Bucknell led the field with 48 birdies, three more than Colgate, but the Raiders made 18 more pars than the Bison.
The team's three unattached players once again performed well, as Lyman Brackett and Jake Maddaloni both shot 71, and Michael Rudnick carded a 75. Maddaloni made five birdies on the day, including three in a row on holes 13-15 that got him to 3-under on the round. Brackett made four birdies of his own.
Bucknell has one more fall tournament remaining, the Veterans Intercollegiate on Oct. 30-31. The Bison will host that event at Sebonack Golf Club in Southampton, N.Y.
