LOWELL, Mass.- The Bucknell Bison field hockey team (5-7) lost 3-2 to the #18 UMass Lowell River Hawks (9-2) on Sunday afternoon in nonconference action. Bucknell's fourth-quarter comeback fell short as time expired on the Bison.
Recap
The first period witnessed little action as neither team scored. The River Hawks had three shot attempts, but the Bison defense prevented scoring. Rachel Apa delivered a shot with 39 seconds left, but the save was made.
UMass Lowell scored nine minutes into the second period to grab the early advantage. The Bison counterattacked a few minutes later when Zoe Carlson-Pietraszek scored her second goal of the weekend to tie the game. The quarter had some drama near the end when UMass Lowell took two shots but was turned away by a Kira Leclercq defensive save and a Sarah Althouse save.
The River Hawks broke the game wide open in the third period by scoring two goals in a five-minute segment. The Bison offense could not reply as they were held to zero shots in the quarter.
Bucknell battled to the bitter end. The River Hawks kept the Bison at bay for most of the period, but Bucknell's pressure finally broke through. A Leclercq shot was saved, but Gianna Puorro was there to clean up. Her shot deflected off an opponent and went into the goal. The deficit was cut to 3-2, but the score would stay that way as the game ended without more scoring.
