Women's Tennis Falls 4-2 on the Road at Rhode Island

KINGSTON, R.I. – Sophomores Whitney King and Anna Lajos captured wins in the top two singles positions, but the Bucknell women's tennis team ultimately fell 4-2 to the Rhode Island Rams on the road Sunday evening. The Bison moved to 2-4 (0-1 PL) on the young season with the loss.
Lajos, who leads the team in singles wins, added to her season total with a solid 6-3, 6-0 win over Rhode Island's Valentina Cvackova at No. 2 to give the Bison their first point. Lajos improved to 9-6 with the win.
King, playing in the No. 1 singles spot, won the first set 6-3 over Rhode Island's Nadia Rajan before dropping the second 0-6. The sophomore bounced back and won the first-to-10 tiebreaker in set three to give the Bison another point and cut the team's deficit to 3-2. The Rams would go on to win at No. 3 singles, however, and clinched the dual.
Bucknell also had a lead going at No. 2 doubles, as Kate Novak and Lajos held a 5-4 advantage over Rajan and Nikki Fernando, but the Rams grabbed wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots before the match could finish.
Bucknell, which has dealt with injury through the first few matches of the spring, ceded No. 6 singles. Mirra Manolov's match at No. 5 singles also went unfinished before the Rams secured the win.
The Bison resume play on Saturday, Feb. 4 with a trip to Saint Francis.
