
Swim & Dive Set to Host Bison Invite Saturday

Setting the Scene
What: Bison Invite
Teams: UMBC (partial squad), American, Navy (men's team), Shippensburg, Lafayette, Lehigh
When: Saturday, Jan. 28 – 12 p.m.
Where: Kinney Natatorium – Lewisburg, Pa.
Note: Prior to the start of Saturday's meet, the Bison swimming & diving program will recognize Hall-of-Famer Kathy Frazier '82 as part of Bison Athletics' 50th anniversary celebration of Title IX. Frazier is a 19-time swimming All-American and graduated with eight school records.
Bucknell Women at a Glance
• The Bison concluded their dual meet schedule with a 181-109 win over Lehigh last Saturday, which gave them a 6-2 (5-2 PL) record for the season. It's the fifth consecutive season Bucknell has posted a winning record in dual meets.
• Bucknell won 10 events last weekend and has now defeated the Mountain Hawks in six straight years.
• Senior Sabrina Vumbacco was named the Patriot League Female Swimmer of the Week on Tuesday after winning the 200 freestyle, the 500 freestyle, and swimming the third leg of the winning 200 medley relay team.
• Bucknell is 36-5 (28-5 PL) in dual meets dating back to the 2018-19 season. Four of its five losses over that stretch have been to Navy.
• The Bison posted a 9-1 (7-1 PL) record during the 2021-22 season. They finished second at the 2022 Patriot League Championships, winning 10 medals and collecting 577.5 points. Bucknell also took second at the previous championships in 2019-20 and have now been the runner-up 13 times in program history.
• Bucknell returned five of its six All-Patriot League honorees: Catherine Craig (1st in 2022, 2nd in 2020), Abby Doss (1st in 2022), Vumbacco (1st in 2022, 2nd in 2020), Sophia Donati (2nd in 2022), Esme Hunter (2nd in 2022).
• Craig, Doss and Vumbacco are Bucknell's three returning First Team All-Leaguers.
• Bucknell added seven student-athletes to its program ahead of the 2022-23 campaign. The newcomers hail from seven different states: California, Connecticut, Maryland, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania.
Bucknell Men at a Glance
• Bucknell improved to 6-2 (5-2 PL) with a decisive 194-73 win over Lehigh last Saturday. It was the team's third straight win over the Mountain Hawks.
• The Bison won 12 events overall, while Chris Kopac and Leo Kuyl both earned two individual victories.
• Bucknell is now 13-5 (11-4 PL) in dual meets over the last two seasons.
• John Gehrig was named the Patriot League Men's Swimmer of the Week back in October and has also earned Bison of the Week honors twice this season.
• Bucknell was 7-3 (6-2 PL) last season. It was the team's best record in dual meet competition since the 2013-14 season.
• The Bison took third at the 2022 Patriot League Championships with 559.5 points, which were the most they've collected since 2012. The team broke a staggering 11 school records, helping head coach Dan Schinnerer earn his third-career Patriot League Men's Coach of the Year nod.
• Bucknell returned six of its eight 2022 All-Patriot League honorees, including all four First Teamers: Andy Dorsel (1st in 2022), Chris Fabian (1st in 2022), Gehrig (1st in 2022), Kopac (1st in 2022), Justin DiSanto (2nd in 2022), Leo Kuyl (2nd in 2022).
• The Bison welcomed 11 newcomers to the program ahead of the 2022-23 campaign. They hail from eight different states: California, Connecticut (2), Florida, Maryland, New York (2), Pennsylvania, Texas and Virginia.
A Look Ahead:
• The Bison will have a two-week hiatus as they prepare for the 2023 Patriot League Championships, which they'll host at Kinney Natatorium Feb. 15-18.
