WORCESTER, Mass.- The Bucknell Bison women's basketball team lost 69-50 to the Holy Cross Crusaders on Saturday. The Bison fell to 6-13 overall and 2-6 in Patriot League play as the Crusaders improved to 16-3 overall and remained perfect in Patriot League competition at 8-0.Â
Tai Johnson led the Bison with 14 points, and Isabella King added 12, but the Bison were stymied in the second half as they were held to 19 points after scoring 31 in the first half.Â
The game was tight at halftime as Holy Cross clung to a 32-31 margin, but a third quarter that saw the Bison only score six points put the game away in the hands of the Crusaders.Â
Holy Cross was led by Cara McCormack who poured in 20 points to lead all scorers.Â
Bucknell shot 42.9% on 21-of-49 shooting while Holy Cross made their baskets at a 26-of-55 (47.3%) mark.Â
The Bison jumped out to a 7-6 lead by the first media timeout. Emma Shaffer and King hit a couple of buckets, and Emma Theodorsson drained a three. However, Shaffer had two early fouls, which landed her on the bench for the remainder of the half. Holy Cross took advantage of the substitution and went ahead by 19-13 before Grace Sullivan ended the quarter with a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to 19-15.
The second quarter witnessed the Bison continually threatening to retake the lead, but Bucknell could only tie the game three times. The first tie came at 19-19 as the Bison started the period on a 4-0 run thanks to buckets by Remi Sisselman and Grace Sullivan. Holy Cross then broke out to a 26-22 lead, but once again, the Orange & Blue used a 4-0 run to tie the game as Johnson and Julie Kulesza each scored once. Holy Cross responded by going up 31-28, and King drained a three to knot it up. Bucknell missed a shot to grab the lead, and Holy Cross scored a single free throw to take the 32-31 halftime advantage.Â
The third quarter started as a gritty, defensive affair, as neither team generated much offense. For the first four minutes, each team only scored one basket apiece, as turnovers and missed opportunities ruled the situation. Bucknell used a Johnson bucket to creep within one point (38-37), but then Holy Cross went on a 14-0 run that extended into the fourth quarter. Nine of those 14 points occurred in the third period. The Holy Cross trey that made the lead 47-37 proved to be the definite dagger.Â
In the fourth stanza, King ended the Holy Cross run with a neat layup, but by the six-minute mark, the Crusaders were up 58-43. The Bison scored a few more baskets but were unable to ignite a late-game rally. Holy Cross matched the Bison in points to stave off any potential danger.Â
