LEWISBURG, Pa. – School-record scores. A hole-in-one. A tournament title. It was certainly a memorable weekend for sophomore Tara Thomas of the Bucknell women's golf team, who has been named the Bison of the Week for her efforts.
Thomas won the Bucknell Invitational over the weekend, becoming the seventh Bison to win the team's home tournament. After opening with a 77 on Saturday morning, she finished with rounds of 69 and 70. The 69 tied the school record, previously set by Bridget Wilcox at Penn State in 2010 and Casey Morrow at the Bucknell Invitational in April of 2021.
Thomas became the first Bison ever to have two rounds of even-par or better in the same tournament, and her 216 total was the best individual 54-hole score in team history by a whopping five shots. Katie Jurenovich held the previous record with a 221 (73-78-70) at the 2010 Bucknell Invitational.
Thomas's weekend was punctuated by an ace at the par-3 16th hole on Sunday. She flew her tee shot directly into the hole for her first-ever hole-in-one. Two holes later she finished off a nine-shot victory for her first career tournament win. Thomas played her last 36 holes in 1-under par, making three birdies, the ace, four bogeys, and 28 pars over that span.
The Bison are off to a strong start in the fall, with a team scoring average of 306.6 through three tournaments. The team's 296 total in the second round on Saturday tied the school record, and the Bison are currently under the team record for low average in a fall season, which is 310.1 in 2019.
Bucknell has two fall tournaments remaining, next weekend at the Navy Fall Invitational and Oct. 15-16 at the Lady Blue Hen Invitational at Rehoboth Beach Country Club.
