Women’s Tennis Has Big First Day at West Point Invitational

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Bucknell women's tennis team combined for a 3-1 record in singles and saw the doubles tandem of Whitney King and Abby Platt win twice to advance to the A Flight quarterfinals on a strong opening day at the West Point Invitational.
King and Platt received a bye into the round of 32 before posting two convincing wins. They defeated Danielle Hack and Thamonpan Jongertakul of UMass 6-2 and then topped Jane Bockman and Ellen Zureick of Marist by a 6-1 count. The Bucknell duo will next face Polina Kozyreva and Miyuka Kimoto of Syracuse in the quarterfinal round on Saturday.
The freshman Platt was also one of Bucknell's three singles winners on Friday. Platt and Tyne Miller were both victorious in the B Flight. Platt won 6-4, 6-4 over Emme Levenson of Colgate and will next take on Natalia Aruj of Binghamton.
Miller turned back Sacred Heart's Ciara O'Toole 6-2, 6-4 and will play Villanova's Maggie Gehrig in the round of 32.
Freshman Mirra Manolov defeated eighth-seeded Helena Cilella of Lehigh 6-1, 6-2 in the opening round in the D Singles flight. Next up for Manolov is Fairfield's Francesca Karman.
Anna Lajos is playing in the A Singles bracket, and she dropped her first-round match to Seton Hall's Aina Plana Ventosa 7-6 (7-3), 6-2.
Madi Sebulsky and Kate Novak are representing the Bison in the E Singles flight, and both received byes into the round of 16.
Play continues on Saturday at the West Point Invitational.
