9/23/2022 10:00:00 AM | General
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Five Bison women's teams are preparing to compete at home this weekend, and Bucknell Athletics will be celebrating the first of three Title IX 50th Anniversary weekends. Each team has invited a noteworthy alumna to join them and be publicly recognized.
In addition, Bucknell staff will be handing out Title IX 50th Anniversary stickers and information cards at all weekend events.
Similar celebrations will be held during the winter and spring seasons, and two larger events are also being planned for the spring semester. A special dinner will be held to honor the 50-year history of women's athletics at Bucknell, and the Title IX anniversary will be a component of the annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day event in February.
Here is a look at this weekend's honorees:
WOMEN'S GOLF hosting Bucknell Invitational Saturday-Sunday at Bucknell Golf Club
Jess Hetrich Shure '03 will be a guest of the team on Saturday when the Bison start play in their annual fall tournament. Women's golf became a varsity sport at Bucknell in 1998-99, and Hetrich was a member of the program's second recruiting class. She later became Bucknell's first medalist when she won the 2002 Bucknell Spring Invitational with two rounds of 77, which was the team record at the time. During her senior year, the Bison became affiliate members of the talent-rich Big South Conference, and Hetrich finished in the top-25 at the 2003 Big South Championship and earned a spot on the league's All-Academic Team.
ROWING vs. Georgetown on Saturday, 9 a.m., Susquehanna River
Head coach Steve Kish will welcome back Jayne Kubat '08, who first joined the Bison rowing team as a novice. She made the varsity as a sophomore an was part of Bucknell's very first Patriot League Championship team in 2006. Kubat received her DVM degree from Cornell and is now a veterinarian as well as an adjunct professor in Bucknell's Department of Biology.
WOMEN'S SOCCER vs. Colgate on Saturday, 12 p.m., Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium
Christa Matlack '11 was enshrined in the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame last year, and on Saturday she will be recognized prior to the Bucknell-Colgate soccer game. One of the top goal-scorers in team history, Matlack was the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year as both a junior and senior. She recorded 32 career goals and was both an NSCAA All-Region and Scholar All-America honoree. Matlack spent several years as the head women's soccer coach at Penn College and is now a STEM Career Coach at Bucknell.
FIELD HOCKEY vs. Drexel on Sunday, 12 p.m., Graham Field at Holmes Stadium
First-year head coach Kelsey Kolojejchick has invited Cindy Barbosa Zanelli '87 to be recognized prior to Sunday's game against Drexel. Barbosa was a two-year captain of the Bison field hockey squad and piled up goaltending records that will likely never be broken. An All-East Coast Conference and Second Team All-Region selection as a senior, Barbosa holds the Bucknell single-game (37) and career (1,039) saves records. Her career total is also the fifth-highest in NCAA Division I history. Zanelli, who also played on the Bucknell women's lacrosse team, averaged more than 18 saves per game as a junior.
VOLLEYBALL vs. Colgate on Sunday, 3 p.m., Davis Gym
Hall-of-Famer Terrie Grieb will be recognized prior to the volleyball home match against Colgate. Grieb came to Bucknell in 1978 as a 22-year-old fresh out of Lock Haven University. She was immediately installed as the head coach of Bucknell's very first varsity volleyball and softball teams during the 1978-79 academic year. Amazingly, she was the head coach of three different sports – volleyball, basketball, and softball – in 1980-81. Her greatest success came in softball, where she piled up 307 victories and was a six-time conference coach of the year in 21 seasons. She was head volleyball coach for seven seasons, highlighted by a 22-11 campaign in 1983. Now in her 45th year at Bucknell, Grieb retired from coaching in 2000 and is currently the associate director of athletics for business and team services.
WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY at Boston College Invitational on Friday, 10 a.m.
The cross country team is competing away from home this weekend, but on Thursday morning head coach Kevin Donner invited soon-to-be Hall-of-Famer Carly Graytock Shea '00 to meet the team. An outstanding distance runner for the Bison, Graytock will be inducted into the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame alongside four other greats next Friday. Graytock led the Bison to their first two Patriot League cross country titles in 1998 and 1999, with the latter squad becoming the first in team history to qualify as a team for the NCAA Championship. She was also a three-time league champion in the 10,000 meters.
In addition, Bucknell staff will be handing out Title IX 50th Anniversary stickers and information cards at all weekend events.
