Men’s Soccer Drops Conference Opener to Navy, 2-0

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Baba Kallie's 25th-minute goal sent visiting Navy on the way to a 2-0 win over 10-man Bucknell in the Patriot League openers for both teams on Saturday night at Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium.
Navy tacked on an 84th-minute penalty kick from David Jackson to improve to 3-3-2 overall, while the Bison fell to 1-6.
Bucknell was on the attack early and nearly opened the scoring just three minutes into the match. Mo Tall delicately chipped a pass over two Navy defenders to Sebastian Paz, whose close-range attempt required a quick reaction save from Pierce Holbrook.
There was end-to-end action throughout the first 25 minutes, but it was Navy making the most of its best opportunity when Jake Granados slipped a pass through to Kallie, who finished past a charging Bennett Schwartz.
Bucknell went down to 10 men in the 41st minute. A Navy throw-in was headed up into the air, and two Bison defenders collided, allowing Kevin Hileman to break in alone. Just as he neared the box, Eddie Perez-Pelaez ran up his back, and the referee showed a red card for denial of a clear goal-scoring opportunity. Jackson's free kick from inches outside the 18 went into the wall, however, and the Bison remained down just a goal at intermission.
Just like in the first half, Bucknell started strong in the second. Only 10 seconds into the period Cade McGrath played a ball through toward Jordan Miller, but Holbrook got off his line just in time to dive on it. In the 53rd minute, Waldemar Kattrup's long free kick fell to Charlie Holmes in a pocket in the center of the area, but the shot went over the bar.
The best of Schwartz's four saves came in the 79th minute when he was perfectly positioned to nab Connor Wolcott's point-blank header.
Navy added an insurance goal in the 84th minute after a Bison defender pushed down Noah Ward on the end line. Jackson buried the PK for his third goal of the season.
Holbrook had to be alert to save two tricky shots from distance late in the match, one on a drive from Marco Valentic ticketed for the top left corner and the other on an attempt from Kattrup.
Navy finished with a 13-11 shot advantage, while Bucknell led 6-1 in corner kicks.
The Bison now have a week off before heading on the road to play American next Saturday.
