WASHINGTON, D.C. – Freshman Cade McGrath scored his first career goal for Bucknell, but American equalized just before halftime and went ahead in the 74th minute on the way to a 2-1 win over the Bison on Saturday at Reeves Field.
The Eagles, who won the Patriot League title two seasons ago and played in the championship game last year, improved to 3-3-1 overall and 1-1 in Patriot League play, while the Bison fell to 1-7, 0-2.
The Bison took an early lead just over 14 minutes in after a throw-in near midfield came to Waldemar Kattrup. He touched a pass to Mo Tall, whose long direct ball found McGrath breaking behind the American back line. The American goalkeeper charged all the way outside the box to try to break up the play, but McGrath eluded him and slotted a shot into the empty net to open his collegiate account.
The Eagles drew level just before the half when Evan Schweickert found shooting space at the top of the box and drove a low shot inside the left post.
Bucknell withstood some American pressure in the second half, but the Eagles found the go-ahead goal in the 74th minute. Troy Elgersma brought down a throw-in along the right side of the area, and he slipped a pass to a wide open Jack Green on the back side.
The Bison had a couple of threatening set pieces in the final 10 minutes but could not get a finishing touch.
American finished with a 13-7 shot advantage while the Bison led 3-1 in corner kicks. Bennett Schwartz made three saves in goal for Bucknell, compared to two saves for American's Matthew Tibbets.
The Bison will now play their next three games at home, including Patriot League fixtures against Lehigh on Wednesday and Lafayette on Saturday.
