LEWISBURG, Pa. – Jordan Miller scored an equalizing goal for Bucknell in the 12th minute, but Saint Francis (Pa.) answered with a goal before the halftime interval followed by two more in the second half, and the Red Flash secured a 4-1 win on Wednesday night at Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium.
Nico Stoddart scored twice for Saint Francis, which improved to 2-2-1 on the season. The Bison fell to 1-5 and will now turn their attention to Patriot League play with Navy coming to Emmitt Field on Saturday night.
Bucknell had most of the possession early in the match, but the Red Flash turned a miscue in the Bison back line into a goal on their first shot of the night. Nine minutes in, an errant square ball left a Bucknell center back stranded, and Max Rigby took the ball away and went in alone on goal. At the top of the 18 he slotted a shot inside the left post for an early 1-0 lead for the visitors.
Less than three minutes later, the Bison were back on level terms. Waldemar Kattrup's free kick into the box was cleared away, but MJ Kuczura hustled to the ball and headed it back into the area. Miller headed the ball down and poked it past the keeper for his first goal of the season.
Saint Francis went back in front in the 25th minute. Alexios Rodriguez brought the ball to the end line and centered a pass into the middle of the area, where Stoddart turned it in for his first goal of the season.
The Red Flash nearly added another before the break but Tobi Joseph shot wide from space along the left flank. Nick Prime came on as a substitute and had some bright moments late in the half for the Bison. His shot required a diving save from Jordaine Jaeger, and then Sebastian Paz's follow-up header went wide.
Saint Francis added two insurance goals about six minutes apart around the hour mark. In the 57th minute, Bucknell substitute goalkeeper Jake Nicoll made a diving stop on a hard, low shot from Rigby, but Stoddard put home the rebound. Then in the 63rd, Lorenz Ender got on the end of a long diagonal ball and scored from the right side of the area.
Bucknell kept pressing despite the three-goal deficit, and in the final 23 minutes hit the crossbar twice and had a goal waved off on a close offside call. Jackson Sullivan, who made his first career start at left back, headed a corner kick off the bar in the 67th minute. Michael Dempsey skipped a shot off the woodwork from a tight angle with 11 minutes to play, and moments later Paz slipped a nice pass to Miller in behind the back line, but the offside flag went up as he fired a shot into the back of the net.
Bucknell outshot Saint Francis 13-12 and led 8-1 in corner kicks. Jaeger made three saves for the Red Flash, and Nicoll stopped two shots in his Bucknell debut.
The Bison next host Navy on Saturday at 6 p.m. at Emmitt Field.
