Elias Lindgren of Williams, who was the runner-up at the 2021 NCAA Division III Championship, crossed the line first in 24:51.1. RPI's Matthew Lecky, another DIII All-American. was second in 24:56.3, followed by Whittaker. The top three finished eight seconds apart, with the next pack of runners coming in 26 seconds later.
All seven Bison runners finished in the top 32, and the scoring five were all 29th or better. Bucknell's second through sixth runners consisted of three sophomores and two freshmen behind the senior Whittaker. Ben Santos was the No. 2 Bison in 21st place, followed by Bobby Lynam (23rd), Trent Dinant (24th), and Grayson Crockett (29th). Henry Didden (31st) and Domenic Campagna (32nd) were displacing runners.
"We were in pretty good position as a team at the 6K mark and then some of our men kind of broke down a bit," said head coach Kevin Donner. "Some of our guys were feeling under the weather with colds and congestion and just didn't have that final gear that you need over the last two kilometers. We should see a pretty good improvement over the next few weeks."
Bucknell will next have a week off before competing at the Boston College Invitational on Sept. 23.
