CHICAGO, Ill. – All-America striker Billy Hency scored two goals to lead host Loyola Chicago to a 4-1 verdict over Bucknell in the season opener for both teams on Friday evening at Loyola Soccer Park.
Sophomore Michael Dempsey notched his first collegiate goal in the 78th minute for the Bison. Dempsey one-timed a long throw-in from freshman Jackson Sullivan, who notched his first career point with the assist.
The Ramblers, who were 9-5-2 last year, scored twice in each half to build a 4-0 cushion. John Gates broke a scoreless tie in the 25th minute when he tucked a shot inside the right post from a tight angle. Hency, the 2021 Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year and a Third Team All-American, pounced on a loose ball and scored with his left foot to make it 2-0 in the 32nd minute.
Loyola broke it open with two goals in a span of 57 minutes midway through the second half. Marc Torrellas collected a Bucknell clearance and scored from about 25 yards out inside the left post, and then moments later it was Hency on a breakaway for his brace.
Loyola outshot Bucknell 17-7 in the first-ever meeting between the two teams. Bennett Schwartz finished with five saves for the Bison, who were playing their first game under new head coach Dave Brandt.
Six players made their Bucknell debuts. St. John's transfer Waldemar Kattrup joined freshmen Charlie Holmes and Marco Valentic in the starting unit, and freshmen Sullivan, Cade McGrath, and Ben Sheffield saw time as substitutes.
Bucknell will remain in Chicago to take on DePaul on Sunday at 2 p.m. Eastern. The game will be streamed live on FloSports.
