Men’s Soccer Drops 2-0 Decision at DePaul
8/28/2022 4:22:00 PM | Men's Soccer
CHICAGO, Ill. – DePaul rode first-half goals from Marek Gonda and Jake Fuderer to a 2-0 win over visiting Bucknell in non-league men's soccer action Sunday afternoon at Wish Field. The Bison fell to 0-2 on the young season, while the Blue Demons improved to 1-0-1 after drawing 25th-ranked Bowing Green on Friday.
The Bison faced some early pressure and successfully defended four early corner kicks, but the Blue Demons broke through from the run of play in the 22nd minute. Cade Hagan played Gonda through in the left channel, and Gonda slotted a shot past Bennett Schwartz.
Bucknell's best looks came on set pieces about two minutes apart. Freshman Ben Sheffield, who made his first career start, headed a shot over the bar, and then from a free kick freshman Cade McGrath's header required a diving save from Gandhi Cruz.
On the half-hour mark, Will Stroud was shoved down along the right edge of the area, and a penalty was awarded. Fuderer scored from the spot with his left foot to make it 2-0.
Both teams attempted four shots in a scoreless second half. The best of Schwartz's three saves came in the 58th minute when he denied Gonda on a semi-breakaway. The Bison had a couple of dangerous crosses in the final 12 minutes. One from Charlie Holmes just missed the head of Friday's goal-scorer Michael Dempsey, and MJ Kuczura's service was nodded wide by Jordan Miller with 5:30 remaining.
Bucknell heads back out on the road on Friday to play St. Bonaventure, and then the Bison welcome Saint Peter's for their home opener on Sunday at 5 p.m.
