Funk Receives Pair of Honors as Men’s Basketball Announces Postseason Awards
6/9/2022 3:27:00 PM | Men's Basketball
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Head coach Nathan Davis and the Bucknell men's basketball team announced its postseason award winners on Wednesday. Senior Andrew Funk headlined the list with a pair of awards: the Benton A. Kribbs Award as the team's Most Valuable Player and the Malcolm E. Musser Award for Leadership.
Junior Alex Timmerman received the Thomas A. Thompson Award for "spirit, intensity, and outstanding defensive play", and junior Xander Rice received the Coaches' Award for outstanding contributions to the program.
Funk is Bucknell's first repeat winner of the Musser Award since Bryson Johnson in 2011-12 and 2012-13. Funk is also the first Bison to win both the Kribbs and Musser awards in the same season since Cameron Ayers in 2013-14.
Funk, who will be using his final season of eligibility as a graduate student at Penn State next season, was the 2022 Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year and a Second Team All-Patriot League selection. He became the ninth player in league history to earn Academic All-Patriot League honors three times, and he was also named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team.
Funk averaged a career-high 17.6 points per game as a senior, the second-highest mark in the conference. He topped the 20-point mark 13 times and the 30-point mark three times while breaking the Bucknell single-season record for minutes played with 1,171. Funk scored a career-high 38 points at Illinois State, which tied the Cancun Challenge record, and he was a three-time Patriot League Player of the Week.
Timmerman enjoyed his best year to date in 2021-22. He played in all 32 games with 10 starts and tallied 7.5 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. A 6'9" center, Timmerman shot 59.9 percent from the field to rank second in the Patriot League, and 76.8 percent from the foul line.
Timmerman had a breakout stretch in November, when he logged 43 points and 32 rebounds in three games at the Cancun Challenge, including a career-high 22 points against Mercer. In the first game after the Thanksgiving-week tournament, he tallied 20 points and 12 rebounds in a win over Siena.
Rice was Bucknell's second-leading scorer at 13.1 points per game. He shot a league-best 88.4 percent from the foul line and ranked fifth in the league at 42.4 percent from the 3-point arc. Rice also ranked third in the PL in assists (3.9) and ninth in steals (1.3). He scored a career-high 25 points against Army late in the season and topped the 20-point mark six times in 2021-22.
Davis also announced that the 2022 recipient of the Backcourt Club is former Bison standout Mark Allsteadt '87, who has continued to be a loyal supporter of the program. Allsteadt recorded 1,020 points during his three varsity seasons from 1984-87. Allsteadt was Bucknell's leading scorer in 1985-86, and he was the co-recipient of the Musser Award during his senior season, when he captained the Bison to an East Coast Conference championship and the first NCAA Tournament appearance in team history.
