Abby Doss, Maddie Hartigan and Chris Kopac earn individual honors
RICHMOND, Va. – The Bucknell swimming & diving teams were honored by the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) as Scholar All-America Teams for their performance in the classroom.
In addition, 2022 graduate Maddie Hartigan, rising junior Abby Doss and rising sophomore Chris Kopac made the organization's Scholar All-America Second Team for clocking an NCAA 'B' cut time and achieving a semester grade point average of at least 3.50.
During the spring semester, the Bison women logged a 3.50 GPA while the men's team registered a 3.39 GPA.
On the women's side, 25 student-athletes made the Bucknell Dean's List. Of that group, 2022 graduates Alexis Faria and Caroline Mayk, rising seniors Jacqueline Rounsavill and Molly See, rising juniors Grace Kujawski and Kayla Lichtner and rising sophomores Gillian Camperlengo and Meghan Catherwood all earned 4.0 GPAs.
From the men's team, 11 student-athletes made the Bucknell Dean's List, with 2022 graduate Derek Knight and rising senior Alec Baker each securing a 4.0 GPA. Notably, Knight, a cell biology & biochemistry major, maintained a perfect GPA for his entire time as a Bison.
Hartigan graduated as a three-time All-Patriot League First Team member and as an eight-time Patriot League individual medalist; she also left Lewisburg with school records in the 100 freestyle (50.01), the 200 freestyle (1:47.29), the 500 freestyle (4:45.85) and the 1,000 freestyle (9:53.16).
Doss, a native of nearby Shamokin, made the All-Patriot League First Team during her first campaign as a Bison. Most notably, she won two Patriot League individual medals and broke the school standard in the 200 breaststroke (2:13.44) as a sophomore transfer.
Kopac made a splash as a freshman, leading the men's team with 45 points at the Patriot League Championships. The All-Patriot League First Team honoree won a silver medal in the 200 freestyle and also set a new school standard in that event (1:36.48).
Last season, the Bison women finished second at the Patriot League Championships and went 9-1 (7-1 PL) in dual meet competition. Notably, the class of 2022 graduated having gone a remarkable 30-3 (23-3 PL) in dual meets, its only losses coming to defending Patriot League champion Navy. The class of 2022 also helped Bucknell finish as the runner-up at two of the three Patriot League Championships contested during its time in Lewisburg.
Â
In 2022-23, the Bison will bring back five All-Patriot League performers: Doss, Catherine Craig, Sophia Donati, Esme Hunter and Sabrina Vumbacco. They will most notably need to replace Hartigan, who earned the Christy Mathewson Award as the Bucknell class of 2022's top female athlete.
Â
During the 2021-22 campaign, the Bucknell men placed second at the ECAC Championships and third at the Patriot League Championships; they also went 7-3 (6-2 PL) in dual meet competition. At the Patriot League Championships, they broke a staggering 11 school records over the course of the four-day event, helping head coach Dan Schinnerer earn his third career Patriot League Men's Coach of the Year nod.
Â
For this season, the Bison will return six of their eight 2022 All-Patriot League selections: Kopac, Justin DiSanto, Andy Dorsel, Chris Fabian, John Gehrig and Leo Kuyl. That group includes all of their record four First Team honorees: Dorsel, Fabian, Gehrig and Kopac.
