LEWISBURG, Pa. – When we last saw the Bucknell Varsity Eight in action four weeks ago, they were racing to a dominant victory at the Patriot League Championships. Now the Bison are set to embark on a trip to England and Switzerland, where they will be tested against top international competition.
The same crew that captured Patriot League gold last month on the Cooper River will be joined by a pairs entry at the famed Henley Women's Regatta at Henley-on-Thames, England. The group departs for London on Sunday evening, and after a few days of training and sightseeing, the Henley will be contested on June 17-19.
The Varsity Eight, led by coxswain Juliette Gaggini and powered by Erin Sullivan, Maddie Wickers, Natalie Kreusch, Caroline Brandt, Kona Glenn, Hayden Groves, Kate Meerscheidt, and Elizabeth Berlinger, will be racing in the Ron Needs Cup, a championship 8+ event. Coxswain Ollie McDonald will also be traveling as an alternate. Among the 15 crews entered in the event are American college squads from Cal-Berkeley and Brown, boats from the Netherlands, Ireland, and Canada, and a host of entries from around the United Kingdom. Time trials for the Ron Needs Cup start at 11:35 a.m. local time on Friday, June 17.
Chloe Segal and Georgia Lambrakis will be competing for the Redgrave Challenge Vase, a championship pairs event. The Bison duo is one of 13 entries in the race, which also features Brown University and a Dutch pair. Time trials for the Redgrave Challenge Vase start at 10:20 a.m. local time on Friday.
After the conclusion of the Henley Women's Regatta, the Bucknell group will enjoy another day of sightseeing in London before traveling to Lucerne, Switzerland on June 21. The team will spend three days in Switzerland training and sightseeing, with the possibility of a scrimmage to be arranged. The team then returns to the U.S. on Friday, June 24.
Be sure to stay tuned over the next two weeks, as the Bison rowers will be chronicling their trip on the team's Instagram feed (@bucknellwrow) and with a blog on BucknellBison.com.
