ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Michaela Bracken broke the school record in the 400-meter hurdles and Gianna Macones won the silver medal in the long jump to highlight a busy opening day of action for the Bucknell women's track and field team at the Patriot League Championships.
The Bison amassed 23 points on Friday and sit in fourth place in the team standings. Navy leads the field with 77 points, followed by Army (63), Boston University (34), Bucknell, Holy Cross (14), Lehigh (11), Lafayette (6), Loyola (5), and American (1).
"Our women had a pretty good day one, as we scored in five of the six events and put multiple qualifiers in a number of events for tomorrow. Our sprinters were a highlight, as we have two in the finals of the 100, 200 and 400, and Bracken looked great in the trials of the 400 hurdles and broke our school record," said head coach Kevin Donner. "Hull is now our number three all-time in the 100 hurdles. We also advanced Turner in the 800, plus Forker and Paczewski in the 1500. Ramos was fifth in the 10k but was under the previous meet record, which shows you how tough the league is right now for women's distance. It was nice to get some points from our 4x800 relay team as well. We are in a good position to get over 100 points, which would put us in a solid team placing."
Bracken clocked the fastest preliminary time in the field in the 400 hurdles, and her mark of 1:00.52 shattered Jen Silvestri's six-year-old Bucknell record. Silvestri ran a 1:00.63 in 2016. Bracken, who also holds school records in the indoor high jump and pentathlon, will return for the final as the top seed on Saturday.Macones was Bucknell's top point-scorer on Friday, picking up eight points with her runner-up finish in the long jump. She hit 18 feet, 6 ½ inches on her third jump of the day, trailing only the 18-10 posted by Navy's Katherine Halbert. Madison Libby also scored for the Bison, finishing seventh with a top mark of 18-0 ½.
Ashlyn Ramos and Jennifer Scott turned in fifth-place finishes. Ramos opened the meet by taking fifth in the 10,000 meters with a time of 35:05.32. That time was about 32 seconds faster than her winning time from a year ago. Scott tied for fifth in the pole vault, clearing 11-11 ¼. Karly Renn also made that height but on her third attempt, which left her in ninth place.
Riley Beebe finished seventh in the javelin throw with a top mark of 132-2. The Bison also scored in the 4x800 relay with a fifth-place finish from Tara Lyons, Mackenzie Turner, Anna Posh, and Karly Forker.
Bracken wasn't the only Bison to advance in preliminary heats on Friday. Meghan Quinn, who won the 60-meter dash at the Patriot League Indoor Championships in February, moved on in both the 100 and 200. In the 100, Quinn (12.18) and Macones (12.35) both finished second in their heats to qualify for Satuday's final. Quinn (25.29) and Bridget Lalonde (25.22) finished second in their heats in the 200 to move on.
Lalonde also advanced in the 400-meter dash with a time of 56.58 and will join teammate Jessie Castellano (56.96) in Saturday's final.
In the 100-meter hurdles, Karen Hull set a personal best and moved up to the No. 3 spot on Bucknell's all-time list with a time of 14.26. She was runner-up in her heat and fourth overall, and she will return for the final on Saturday.
Forker (4:34.65) and Abigail Paczewski (4:41.86) are moving on in the 1,500 meters.
The Patriot League Championships wrap up on Saturday at the U.S. Naval Academy. Field events get underway at 9 a.m., with the first track event slated for 1:10 p.m. Points will be awarded in 16 events, culminating with the 4x400 relay at approximately 5:20 p.m.
