Kate Novak clinches team win with fifth singles victory
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Bucknell women's tennis team edged Lafayette, 4-3, on Saturday at Lehigh's Lewis Indoor Tennis Center.
The Bison (12-6, 3-1 PL) picked up their third-straight Patriot League victory with their triumph over the Leopards (4-10, 1-4 PL) in a match that was moved from the outdoor Sullivan Courts due to rain in Easton, Pa.
Sophomore Kate Novak clinched Bucknell's win with a decisive 6-2, 6-3 decision over Eleanor Campbell at fifth singles. Senior captain Daniela Bellini and first year Anna Lajos were the Bison's other singles victors, winning on the top and fourth courts respectively.
Bellini remained unbeaten in Patriot League action, now at 4-0, with her 7-5, 6-0 victory over Olivia Boeckman. Lajos vaulted to an impressive 17-4 (12-4 dual) overall with her 6-3, 6-1 triumph over Melanie Sparhawk; she remained the team leader in dual match victories and tied fellow first-year star Whitney King for first among Bison in overall wins.Â
Bucknell was bolstered by sweeping the doubles matches. Bellini and King's 6-2 victory on the top court improved their season record to an incredible 20-3. Tyne Miller and Laurel Utterback posted a 6-0 whitewashing in the second position while Novak and Lajos teamed for a 6-4 decision at third doubles.Â
The Bison continue Patriot League competition tomorrow with an 11 a.m. match at Loyola (Md.).
