HELLERTOWN, Pa. – The Bucknell men's golf team posted a 298 team score in the second round of the Patriot League Championship on Saturday at Steel Club. That is a 13-stroke improvement on its opening-day tally, but the Bison were unable to make up much ground on the competition and remain in eighth place.
The Bison have a 609 composite through 36 holes, seven behind seventh-place Navy. Loyola made a move on Saturday with a 290 tally, and with a 584 total, the Greyhounds now have a six-shot lead on second-place Colgate. Lafayette is third at 591, followed by Lehigh (599), Army (599), Holy Cross (600), Navy, and Bucknell.
The low Bison on Saturday was freshman Michael Rudnick, who posted a 1-under-par 71 to move into the top-10 on the individual leaderboard. Rudnick made four birdies in a six-hole span on the way to a sensational 33 on the outward nine, and he added a fifth birdie at No. 15 to bounce back from a few dropped shots. Rudnick's season-best rounds were a pair of 70s at the Bucknell Invitational back in October. Those came on a par-70 course, so this was his first career under-par round.
Jackson Bussell also had a strong day with a 1-over 73. Bussell tallied two birdies and seven pars on the way to a front-nine 34. Bucknell also counted a 76 from Blake Wisdom and a 78 from Jason Lohwater.
Rudnick is the top Bison on the leaderboard with a 3-over 147, which puts him in a tie for sixth place. Rudnick's second-round 71 was tied for the second-best score in the field, trailing only the 68 posted by new leader Carlo Pizzano of Loyola. Pizzano, who opened with a 72, is at 4-under for the tournament, two better than Lafayette's Ryan Tall and three in front of Loyola teammate Brandon Berry.
The third and final round gets underway at 8 a.m. Sunday.
