WASHINGTON, D.C. – Kendall Goldblum scored the tiebreaking goal with 1:26 remaining, lifting American to a tight 12-11 victory over Bucknell in Patriot League women's lacrosse action on Saturday at the Jacobs Athletics Complex. Taylor Kopan scored four goals, Allie Boyce had three, and Taylor McClain tallied a goal and four assists for the Bison, who led for much of the game only to fall victim to the Eagles' fourth-quarter rally.
Bucknell fell to 6-7 overall and 3-3 in the Patriot League, while American moved to 8-5 overall and 3-2 in league play. The Eagles leapfrogged the Bison into fourth place in the Patriot League standings.
Bucknell trailed 3-1 after a first quarter dominated by the two defenses, but the Bison exploded for seven goals in the second period to take an 8-5 lead at intermission. It was a 5-5 game until McClain, Emma Cashwell, and Boyce all scored in the final 4:03 of the half.
American closed within 9-8 when Goldblum tallied the first of her four second-half goals, but Caroline Miller picked up a rebound and scored a big goal with 56 seconds left in the third quarter to make it a 10-8 game after 45 minutes.
Two straight goals by Goldblum tied the game at 10-10, and then after a couple of Bison turnovers on clears, Alyssa Apuzzo gave the Eagles their first lead since it was 4-3. The Bison gained possession on the draw control and Cashwell earned a free-position shot. Her attempt was saved, but Kopan jumped on the ground ball and fired it home to knot the game at 11-apiece with 2:49 remaining.
The Bison appeared to have the draw control but a foul was called, giving American a key late possession. The Eagles took advantage, as Goldblum drove from the top and scored the go-ahead tally.
Miller nabbed the draw control near the sideline, and the Bison called timeout to set up a play for the tying goal. With the clock inside 30 seconds, they went to Laurel McHale, who tried to power her way to the goal but was called for a charging foul just as she unleashed a shot that skipped wide. American was able to clear and run out the clock.
Boyce topped the 30-goal mark in her rookie season with three goals on five shots. Miller also had a three-point day with two goals and one assist. Goalie Caitlin Tucker had a terrific day with 14 saves.
Ella Payer recorded six draw controls to give her an even 100 in her career, and she also had primary defending duties on American's all-time scoring leader Emma Vinall, who was kept off the scoresheet. Payer's 68 draw controls this season are now fourth-most in team history, and her 100 career DCs are ninth-most in team history.
American finished with a 35-27 shot advantage and a 14-13 edge in draw controls. Stefanie Walsh joined Goldblum with four goals for the Eagles, and goalie Mary Alice Collins logged 11 saves.
Bucknell returns to action on Wednesday at No. 6 Loyola at 7 p.m., and then Boston University comes to Graham Field next Saturday for a Senior Day game at 2 p.m.

Allie Boyce is going to have some serious carpet burns after this sequence, but it's all worth it when it means a hat trick and a three-goal lead for the Bison! #rayBucknell
