About the Bison

Bucknell heads to Annapolis for the 2022 Patriot League Championship Friday through Sunday at the USNA Golf Course. The Bison played this course back on Oct. 2-3 at the Navy Invitational and posted rounds of 328 and 326. Tara Thomas (77) and Tatum McKelvey (78) turned in the team's two best scores that week.
Thomas and McKelvey will be in the field once again this week, joined by Cristina Canales, Sahana Paravantavida, Sun Woo Jeon, and Kelsey Yi in the play-6, count-4 format.
This will be the first Patriot League Championship appearance for the freshman Thomas and the junior Paravantavida, and the second for Canales, McKelvey, Jeon, and Yi.
Bucknell is coming off a 10th-place finish at the Prospect Bay Intercollegiate on Apr. 2-3. The Bison posted team scores of 333-330-334 in extremely challenging weather conditions.
Bucknell's best round of the spring was a closing 298 at the Jackrabbit Invitational in Las Vegas on March 15. McKelvey's 1-under 71 was just two shy of the school record, and the Bison also counted a 72 from Thomas, a 76 from Canales, and a 79 from Jeon.
Thomas leads the team with an 80.0 scoring average dating back to the start of the fall season. She also has a team-best 81.6 spring average. Canales (80.7) and McKelvey (81.6) rank just behind Thomas with their full-season marks.
This year's Patriot League champion will receive the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Women's Golf Regionals. For the first time ever, there will be six NCAA regional sites: Stanford GC, Vanderbilt Legends Club, The Championship Course at University of New Mexico, University of Michigan GC, Karsten Creek GC, and Seminole Legacy GC. All six regionals will be contested on May 9-11, with the NCAA Championship slated for May 20-25 at Grayhawk GC in Scottsdale, Ariz.

The Bison at the Patriot League Championship

The Patriot League began sponsoring women's golf in 2013, and this will be the ninth Patriot League Women's Golf Championship. This will also be the first championship contested over three days.
Bucknell won the second edition in 2014, posting 930 (313-306-311) at Saucon Valley Country Club.
Lehigh, Bucknell, Boston University and Richmond accounted for four different champions in the first four years of the championship, and then Richmond repeated in both 2017 and 2018. Boston University won again in 2019, and after the 2020 event was canceled due to COVID-19, Navy captured its first Patriot League title at Saucon Valley CC last year.
Bucknell placed fourth a year ago, posting rounds of 316-324-313 to finish in front of Lehigh and Holy Cross. Cristina Canales was the low Bison, finishing T-11th with scores of 81-77-78. She missed a top-10 finish and an All-Patriot League medal by one shot.
Bucknell's best individual finish in a Patriot League Championship was Bridget Wilcox's runner-up placement in the inaugural event in 2013. Other top-five finishes include Lauren Bernard (3rd, 2014), Wilcox (4th, 2014), Kasha Scott (T-5th, 2014), Emily Larson (T-4th, 2016), and Katie Childers (5th, 2018).
The low PLC round by a Bucknell player is a 72 by Childers in the second round of the 2019 championship at Independence GC in Virginia.
