The Bison top the defending MAAC champs to complete 2-0 weekend
LATHAM, N.Y. – The Bucknell women's tennis team topped defending MAAC champion Siena, 5-2, on Sunday afternoon at Tri-City Fitness.
The Bison (6-1, 0-0 PL), who defeated 2021 NEC runner-up Bryant on Saturday, completed their latest 2-0 weekend with their victory over the Saints (3-5, 0-0 MAAC).
First years Whitney King and Anna Lajos continued their winning ways, moving to 14-2 and 11-1 respectively on the season. King was a 6-1, 6-4 victor over Laia Giralt at second singles; she also teamed with senior captain Daniela Bellini for a 6-2 triumph over Giralt and 2021 All-NEC First Teamer Meagan Brown on the top doubles court that improved their season record to 14-2.
Playing up one spot at fourth singles, Lajos earned a hard-fought 4-6, 6-2, 10-7 victory over Anastasia Koniaev. Kate Novak added a 6-4, 6-4 decision over Jade Gautier at fifth singles while Madi Sebulsky topped Shelby Madeiros, 2-6, 6-2, 10-3, on the sixth court. Lajos and Sebulsky also teamed for a 6-2 triumph on the third doubles court.
With six wins in their first seven matches, Bucknell is off to its best start since it started the 2018-19 campaign with eight-straight victories. That was the first time since 2004 the Bison started a season 8-0; Bellini was a first year at the time and picked up a critical win over All-Patriot League selection Mackenzie Deeter in Bucknell's 6-1 win over Colgate, the last in that season-opening stretch.
Bucknell next returns to the Central PA Tennis Center for matches against Saint Francis (Feb. 26 at 2 p.m.) and IUP (Feb. 27 at 2 p.m.)..
