ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Bucknell men's swimming & diving team placed third at the Patriot League Championships, which wrapped up on Saturday night at Lejeune Hall.
Overall, the Bison won four individual and two relay medals. They also broke 11 school records over the course of the four-day event, helping head coach Dan Schinnerer earn his third career Patriot League Men's Coach of the Year nod.
On Saturday, John Gehrig and Leo Kuyl were two of many standout performers. Gehrig won a bronze medal in the 200 butterfly, also clocking a school-record time of 1:46.14 that met the NCAA 'B' standard during the preliminaries.
Kuyl broke a 100 freestyle standard held for 34 years by Bucknell Athletics Hall of Famer Jim Harvey in the preliminaries. His time of 44.14 took .23 of a second off of Harvey's previous record, which had stood since it won him the 1988 East Coast Conference title. Kuyl, who won a silver medal in Thursday's 50 freestyle behind a school-record time of 19.96, went on to place fourth in the 100 freestyle's 'A' finals.
Kopac was the top Bison point producer, tying for ninth in the overall field with 45 points. Gehrig (t-15th, 39), Andy Dorsel (t-16th, 38.5) and Fabian (t-17th, 38) also cracked the overall top 20.
Beyond Gehrig and Kuyl, six Bison qualified for Saturday's 'A' finals. In addition, Bucknell clocked a total of 12 program top-five times on that day, with nine falling in the top three.
Kuyl was one of three Bison in the 100 freestyle 'A' finals, joining Fabian and DiSanto, who went sixth and seventh respectively. Gehrig was joined in the 200 butterfly 'A' finals by Dorsel, who tied for fifth. Sean Quinn also won this event's consolation finals.
Kopac logged a pair of program top-10 times during his fifth-place showing in the 1,650 freestyle. Nick Haddad and Will Hedges rounded out Bucknell's 'A' finalists on the Patriot League Championships' final day, with Haddad going fourth in the 200 backstroke and Hedges taking eighth in the 200 breaststroke.
The Bison ultimately finished behind Navy (874) and Army West Point (740.5) with 559.5 points. They have finished in this spot at three of the past four Patriot League Championships contested.
Schinnerer was previously named the Patriot League Men's Coach of the Year in 2008 and 2010 and the Women's Coach of the Year in 2013 and 2020.
