CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Bucknell University baseball team held a 2-1 lead heading into the eighth inning thanks to an impressive season debut from Will Greer, but Richmond rallied for two runs in the bottom of the eighth, taking a 3-2 win over the Bison in their second game of the Swig & Swine Classic.
Bucknell started the game well, scoring the first run of the game on an RBI groundout by Grant Voytovich. Anthony Sherwin led off the game with a single up the middle, moving two bases on a hit by pitch and a groundout before touching home on Voytovich's first RBI of the season.
Bucknell extended its lead to two in the fourth, providing ample support to Greer, making his first start of the year. Greer cruised in his season debut, going seven innings while allowing just three hits and one unearned run with seven strikeouts. The seven fanned batters were one shy of his career high.
Voytovich was involved again to extend the Bison lead, this time singling to left field to score Jacob Corson, who singled one batter before. The Bison capitalized on an error in the Richmond outfield on the play.
However, Richmond found itself capitalizing on a Bison error in the bottom of the frame, with the Spiders reaching on a triple before an infield error allowed Richmond to halve the Bison deficit, 2-1, after four innings.
Greer, who was replaced after seven innings, finished his outing by allowing just one hit through the final three frames.
An RBI double from Alden Mathes and the go-ahead single by Will Gerskey two batters later gave Richmond a 3-2 lead it would not relinquish in taking the one-run victory. The Bison did manage to get the tying run in scoring position in the ninth when Logan Kellerman walked and stole second, but Bucknell couldn't put the equalizing run across as it dropped its second straight game by one run this season.
The Bison out-hit their opposition once again, finishing with nine hits to Richmond's six. Senior Brendan Lowery continued his hot start to the season, finishing 2-4 on the day. Kyle Lyons, Kendall Pierson, Voytovich, Chris Cannizzaro, and Sherwin also added hits.
Bucknell concludes the Swig & Swine Classic against Iowa on Sunday morning at 10 a.m.
