LEWISBURG, Pa. - Cecelia Collins scored a game-high 16 points and Emma Shaffer pulled down nine rebounds but the Bucknell women's basketball team lost to Holy Cross, 62-45, in its Patriot League opener Friday afternoon at Sojka Pavilion. The Crusaders were led by 15 points from Bronagh Power-Cassidy, who connected on 4 of 6 from 3-point range.
Holy Cross (9-3, 1-0 PL) built an 18-10 lead at the end of the first quarter thanks to 57.1 percent shooting in the opening period. The Crusaders extended their lead to 35-20 at halftime.
Bucknell (4-8, 0-1 PL) never led in the contest and could not draw closer than 11 points in the second half. The Bison shot 32.6 percent (15-for-46) in the game, including 13 of 30 (43.3 percent) from the free throw line.Â
"My biggest message to the team is keep hanging in there. Keep fighting," said head coach Trevor Woodruff, "Stay focus. Show up. I believe that is the only way you play through the difficulties of what we do in sports."Â
Holy Cross struck quickly in the first period jumping out to a 7-0 lead. Bucknell fought back to make it 7-5 by the 6:00 mark. After that, both teams went cold with no baskets being scored for nearly three minutes. Holy Cross broke the skein with a second chance basket. A Crusader run finished the period at 18-10 Holy Cross. A Remi Sisselman three pointer near the end of the period provided that 18-10 margin.Â
The second quarter continued with where the first period left off as Holy Cross continued their run to extend the lead to 30-16. Every time, the Bison scored, the Crusaders answered a tally. By halftime, Holy Cross was up by 15 for a mark of 35-20.Â
Play in the third period became a trend of back and forth. Bucknell was unable to creep closer than 14 points for most of the quarter. In the dying embers of the third quarter fire, the Bison crept within 11 points, 43-32, thanks to two free throws by Collins and a single free throw from Caroline Dingler. Holy Cross prevented any momentum carrying over into the final stanza with a three-pointer at the buzzer.Â
To start the fourth quarter, Emma Theodorsson made a pretty hook shot to rally the Bison. But both teams went cold for the next three minutes of play as the shot to go in was a Holy Cross three-pointer. Sisselman broke the ice with a sensational take to the basket when she maneuvered around three Crusaders in the pain. However, on the next HC possession, a three-pointer flew into the net to provide the dagger. The Bison made four free throws to notch 40 points but the Crusaders kept adding baskets to expand the lead to 60-40. Tai Johnson and Grace Sullivan added buckets along with a Crusader make to finalize the scoring at 62-44.Â
"There is no easy answer. There is no magic answer. There is no one play that it is going to fix everything. That continues to be true. That is what I have seen in my twenty years of coaching and that is what we will continue to do," concluded coach Woodruff.Â
