LEWISBURG, Pa. – Four Bucknell football players were named to the 2022 All-Patriot League Team, the league office announced Tuesday morning. Three members of the Bison defense and one offensive player were among those recognized.
Linebacker Ben Allen, safety Brent Jackson, offensive lineman Ethan Pitzel and defensive back Gavin Pringle each made the All-Patriot League Second Team. Pringle is now a three-time All-League selection, making Second Team as a freshman in 2019 and First Team as a sophomore during the Spring 2021 season. Allen, Pitzel and Jackson, who all served as team captains this season, earned All-League spots for the first time in their careers
It's the second Patriot League postseason award Jackson has collected in his career after he earned Academic All-League as a junior. The Denton, Texas native finished his senior campaign as the FCS leader in solo tackles per game (7.1) and ranked 12th in total tackles per game (10.1). Jackson was also outstanding in coverage, ending up tied for ninth in FCS pass breakups per game (1.4).
Jackson was especially strong over the second half of the season, grabbing four interceptions, forcing two fumbles and recording three sacks over his final six games. He registered double-digit tackles six times, including a career-high 16 with 12 solo stops vs. Colgate.
In Bucknell's win over Lehigh, Jackson filled the stat sheet with a sack, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, an interception and a pass breakup, earning him the first of two back-to-back Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week awards.
Also ranking among the national stat leaders was Pringle, whose 15 pass breakups were most in the Patriot League and tied for third in FCS. The senior posted three interceptions, including the game-winning pick in overtime at Georgetown, and he added 42 tackles with 1.5 tackles for loss.
Pringle registered three or more pass breakups three times and had four against both VMI and Fordham. He also returned an interception 17 yards in the VMI game. Pringle served as one of Bucknell's primary special teams returners as well.
A native of Baltimore, Md., Pringle began his Bucknell career in high fashion when he returned an interception 36 yards for a touchdown in his first collegiate game at Temple. He added a 55-yard fumble return touchdown later that season. Pringle was Bucknell's only Preseason All-Patriot League honoree this season and received preseason recognition three years in a row.
Allen, another team captain, finished second on the Bison roster with 83 total tackles and 43 solo stops. He started each of his last 22 collegiate games at the Mike linebacker position and totaled 158 tackles during that stretch.
Allen added four tackles for loss this season, 1.5 sacks and a pass breakup. He recorded double-digit tackles three times and is one of only two seniors that appeared in every game over his four seasons.
Pitzel has also been an example of consistency throughout his career with the Orange & Blue, starting 10 games as a junior in 2021 and making every start at left tackle this year outside of the season finale vs. Marist. A Solon, Ohio native, Pitzel leads all of Bucknell's offensive players with 23 career starts. He was the only non-senior to be voted a team captain in 2022.
