LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell University men's water polo team led 9-7 in overtime, but visiting Navy managed three unanswered goals to close the game, including the equalizing goal with just two seconds remaining, to take a 10-9 win in sudden-death overtime.
The Bison (11-9, 8-3 MAWPC) started slow out of the gate, as the Mids took a 4-1 lead through the first ten minutes of the contest. Bucknell battled back, however, keeping the Mids off the board for the rest of the second quarter. Bucknell scored three unanswered goals of its own in the process, with Aleksa Stefanovic scoring twice, and Ian Shultz tying the game at 4:24 with three minutes to go in the third.
The two teams went back and forth with three more ties over the next eight minutes. Stefanovic was on hand once more to give Bucknell the lead at the 2:07 mark, but Navy responded with 1:04 left in the fourth. Bucknell had a great chance late on a penalty shot, but a good save by the Navy goalkeeper sent the game to overtime tied at seven.
Bucknell started the first overtime period strongly, as Jack Lewis received a long pass and fired the ball into the near post to give the Bison an 8-7 lead, before Josh Yardley added a goal just over a minute later to give Bucknell a two-goal cushion. Navy battled back, however, in the second overtime period, scoring two goals over the final 2:16 to send the game to sudden death.
The Mids, receiving possession first in the sudden-death period, capitalized on a long shot from Chris Kim to hand the Bison their third league defeat of the season.
Bucknell was led by Stefanovic, who scored four goals in the defeat. Jack Lewis also added multiple goals. Shultz, Shay Gillearn, Hasan Mogultay, and Yardley all scored for the Bison in the setback.
Bucknell will now take a break from conference play when it travels to the Julian Fraser Memorial in Santa Clara, California for four games from October 22-23.
