ALLENDALE, Mich. – Michigan native Kate Novak provided the clinching point in a marathon 5-2 win over Grand Valley State on Saturday, with four of the six singles matches requiring three sets. Then playing its third dual match in less than 24 hours, the Bison ran out of gas in their afternoon tilt with Ferris State and fell by a 4-1 count to finish the weekend with a 2-1 record.
Bucknell went 6-0 in doubles on the day, and in the early match against Grand Valley State, it was Tyne Miller and Anna Lajos with a 7-5 win at No. 2 to clinch the doubles point.
In singles play, Whitney King won a 6-2, 6-2 decision over Sophia Hanover at No. 4, but each of the other five matches were lengthy. Lajos held off Estefania Hernandez 6-3 in the third set to give Bucknell a 3-0 lead in the dual, but Grand Valley State got back in it with three-set wins at No. 2 and 3. Novak, a junior from Mattawan playing about an hour's drive from her hometown, finally clinched it on court five, winning a second-set tiebreaker 7-1 to turn back Ana Romero Gonzalez.
Mirra Manolov took a three-set win over Leonie Leister at No. 6 to close out the 5-2 win.
Bucknell's 4-3 win over Davenport on Friday night saw three of the singles matches go to three sets and two of the straight-set verdicts need tiebreakers in at least one of the sets. So when the Bison turned right back around on Saturday afternoon and played Ferris State at the GVSU Courts, they were running on fumes.
Still, Bucknell came out and won the doubles point, with King and Abby Platt at No. 1 and Novak and Madi Sebulsky at No. 3 winning in tiebreakers.
Ferris State came back and won the first four singles matches, with Platt's match at No. 3 going three sets. The fifth and sixth singles matches went unfinished, and the Bulldogs took the 4-1 win to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Bucknell's fall campaign is now complete. The Bison will next be in action on Jan. 21 at Rutgers.
