LEWISBURG, Pa. – For only the second time all season, the Bucknell volleyball team failed to win a set as Army West Point secured a 3-0 sweep in a Patriot League match Saturday afternoon at Davis Gym. Paige Fixemer logged a match-high 14 kills for the second-place Black Knights, which won by set scores of 25-16, 25-21, 25-16.
Bri Frazilus tallied six kills to lead a balanced Bison rotation in which 15 different players saw action. Jordan Hardy paced the back row with 15 digs, and Frazilus and Allie Lopez had three blocks apiece.
These two teams were meeting for the second time in eight days, as Army prevailed in four sets last Friday at West Point. The Black Knights improved to 11-8 overall and 7-2 in the Patriot League, which is one game behind league-leading Colgate. The Bison are now 11-7 overall and 4-5 in league play, and they are currently holding the sixth and final postseason position.
Army got out to a quick start in the opening set, taking a 7-2 lead after a kill by Allanah Cutler. The Bison pulled as close as 12-10 after a couple of Army hitting errors, but the Black Knights regrouped and won five of the next six points to go up 17-11.
A kill from Frazilus later in the set made it 19-16, but Army won the final six points in a row to go up 1-0 in the match.
Set two was much tighter, and the Bison used an early 4-0 run to flip a 4-2 deficit into a 6-4 lead. A shared block from Frazilus and Lopez on Cutler capped the run. There were six ties and three lead changes in the second stanza, but Army made a move just past the midway point.
Leading 14-13, the Black Knights went on an 8-2 run, capped by a Fixemer kill, to jump ahead 22-15. The Bison fought off three set points thanks to two kills from Tijana Kostic and another Frazilus/Lopez block, but Savannah Bray closed out the set with a kill for Army.
The Black Knights never trailed in the third set, although it was tied on three early occasions. Their lead was just 9-8 when Bray served five straight points as part of a 6-0 run. After Bucknell pulled within 15-11, Army launched another 6-0 run to go up 21-11. Bray's ninth kill of the match closed it out.
Army finished with a 41-24 advantage in kills and outhit the Bison .193 to .056.
The only other time all season the Bison have lost in three sets came against Buffalo at the Western New York Invitational back on Sept. 9.
Bucknell will now play its next four matches in a row on the road, starting with a trip to the Lehigh Valley next weekend. The Bison will visit Lafayette on Friday at 7 p.m. and Lehigh on Saturday at 4 p.m. Bucknell posted 3-0 wins over both the Leopards and Mountain Hawks last month.
